Chris Wilder’s back in the Sheffield United hot seat, and he’ll be hoping to get the Blades back to winning ways against one of his former clubs.

The boyhood Sheffield United fan was sacked just three months ago, but has already been re-hired after his successor Ruben Selles lost all six of his first games in charge.

Wilder has already got stuck back into training to help the Blades recover from being rock bottom of the Championship with just one league goal scored. The Sheffield United manager can make history this season as he begins his fifth spell with the club as player and manager.

The Blades host Championship returners Charlton Athletic this Saturday – and Chris Wilder has an interesting history with the South London club who will be looking to come and spoil his reunion party.

Charlton Athletic can spoil the party at Bramall Lane

Wilder played for the Addicks in the early 1990s, going on loan there twice from Sheffield United during his first six year spell at Bramall Lane.

He came close to becoming Charlton Athletic manager in 2016 after he led Northampton Town to the League Two title, with the Cobblers giving him permission to hold talks. However no agreement was reached. League One opponents Sheffield United then came calling, and the rest is history.

It’s fitting, then, that he meets the Addicks in his first game back as Blades boss this weekend, and Nathan Jones’ side will be keen to steal the spotlight and record their first league win since the opening day.

Wilder has faced Charlton five times as manager – and it turns out his record is pretty poor.

Chris Wilder’s record against Charlton Athletic

In the five games Wilder has managed against Charlton, he has won on just one occasion.

The other four meetings ended in two draws and two losses.

In 2013, he faced them with Oxford United in the third round of the Carabao Cup, losing 4-0, before managing a 2-2 draw against them in the FA Cup a few months later. The Addicks won the replay 3-0.

As Blades boss, Wilder drew 1-1 with Charlton in their first meeting in the 2016/17 season. He finally registered a win over them at Bramall Lane, winning 2-1.

Pundits believe appointing Wilder was the correct decision. He has to prove them right, starting this weekend.
