Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has opened up on his messy Owls exit, and the moment where he knew that his tenure could be drawing to a close.
Sheffield Wednesday’s summer period has been a mess from start to finish, with a catalogue of errors being overseen by Dejphon Chansiri.
The first-team have been torn apart, with youngsters having to fill in the voids, something that paints a remarkable contrast to the beginning of last season, which saw hope and optimism amongst the Sheffield Wednesday fanbase.
Under the stewardship of young and ambitious coach Danny Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday had been dragged out of the mire, with the German notching survival in the Championship after picking up a winless Championship side at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.
For a manager who was widely remarked as one of the best coaches that Sheffield Wednesday have had in recent times, things turned sour towards the back-end of his tenure, for which he has now given more clarity on.

Danny Rohl discusses Sheffield Wednesday turning point
Danny Rohl has given an in-depth interview, where he has shed light on his final season in S6, as well as the details around his departure from the club.
He also spoke about when he first had doubts over his future at the club, where an accumulation of shortcomings made him question if he had the ability to take Sheffield Wednesday forward.
Speaking to The Times, Rohl said: “It was around the Hull game, where we lost to a very late goal,” he said. “We couldn’t pay the salaries and wages, the communication was not what I expected and there were all the small things. I fought myself, and asked myself: ‘What could happen in the summer? Do I have the conviction we can make the next step?’
“I tried to speak with the club, to see if there was a dialogue, and when there wasn’t I had to take a decision.”
Following the defeat against Hull City, Sheffield Wednesday went on to manage only one more win in the campaign, at home to Middlesbrough, with such results ending any slim hope of a play-off push.

Danny Rohl was left in an untenable position by Dejphon Chansiri
As the 2024/25 season came close to its conclusion, it was clear that a difficult period awaited Sheffield Wednesday from Danny Rohl’s perspective.
He had a glimpse of the mess that was set to unfold throughout the summer, whether it was the unpaid wages or the poor communication, which had only been a catalyst for issues becoming much more prominent.
Sheffield Wednesday’s troubles all source back to Dejphon Chansiri and his hands-on approach that falls flat on its face whenever he decides to take a step back.
Not only have communication problems from Chansiri left the club in a dire state for the season ahead, but it left a high-level, ambitious coach with no option but to leave.
