Sheffield Wednesday have unusual ‘problem’ in transfer market as Henrik Pedersen priority revealed

A nightmare of a summer has now turned into what could be a very busy one for Sheffield Wednesday, as we exclusively reveal the approach Henrik Pedersen will take to these final two weeks of the transfer window.

Until just last week, Sheffield Wednesday were not allowed to pay a fee for new players and had huge restrictions on the contracts they could offer. With that embargo now lifted, it’s all stations go as the Owls look to repair their depleted squad.

We’ve seen the remaining players put up a brave fight against Leicester City last weekend before a very young Owls side triumphed in the Carabao Cup versus Bolton Wanderers.

But, if Henrik Pedersen is to have any hope of keeping Wednesday in the Championship, he will need to recruit a handful of players, and quickly.

What we know about Henrik Pedersen’s transfer plans

EFL Analysis has exclusive information via our Chief Football Correspondent Graeme Bailey as to what things are like behind the scenes at Sheffield Wednesday now, with an insight into the sheer volume of players the Owls have been offered lately.

Bailey said: “They’ve been offered so many, I think that’s what Pedersen meant when he mentioned the 60 players. This is the problem in a way, they need the bodies and so they cannot rule anybody out.

“They will no doubt be in touch with so many teams and agents right now. They are trying, and it will certainly be a busy couple of weeks.”

Pedersen made it clear he needs more players if he is to make it through this season, and it sounds like getting bodies won’t necessarily be a problem.

We asked Bailey what nature of deals Wednesday might go for, and he told us they may well have the upper hand over Championship rivals thanks to one key factor.

Bailey added: “I think they are more inclined to look at loans first, as they need to be done before deadline day. The free agents can wait, in a way.

“One big thing as well is that Sheffield Wednesday can probably offer first-team football consistently to these players, but at the same time not many people know what Henrik Pedersen’s style of football is going to be. It’s going to be an interesting few weeks.”

The latest names to be linked with Sheffield Wednesday

It looks like Sheffield Wednesday’s first signing of the summer will be a familiar face, with Stuart Armstrong set to return to Hillsborough.

It is thought the Owls are also close to signing Liam Cooper, with the former Leeds man expected to arrive on a free transfer soon.

In terms of loan deals, reports claim Wednesday are keen on Jaden Heskey, the Man City youngster and son of Premier League icon Emile.

They were also keen on Toby Collyer and Harry Amass from Man Utd, but the former appears set to join West Brom now.
