Derby County star just landed himself an awful Championship record, and it happened in the cruellest possible way

Derby County successfully dragged themselves out of the relegation zone with a win over Preston North End on Wednesday night, but it was a bad outing for one player.

It’s now four successive victories for Derby, who have been in resurgent form since John Eustace arrived at the club.

Goals from Craig Forsyth and Jerry Yates secured all three points at Pride Park against a lacklustre Preston side, and the win lifts Derby up to 20th place in the Championship table with seven games to go.

Derby fans hailed ‘miracle’ worker Eustace for his role in their change of fortunes, and there’s now a very real possibility that they can perform this great escape.

But, the game ended very early and cruelly for one Derby man, and it left him holding one of the worst imaginable records in the process.

Ryan Nyambe has zero career goals in 202 Championship appearances

For weeks now, we’ve been following Ryan Nyambe as he closes in on this record, and he has now officially become the player with the most career appearances in the Championship without scoring a goal.

Nyambe made his 202nd appearance in the second tier last night, and with no goal to his name, he enters the history books as the bearer of this sorry record.

Truth is, Nyambe hasn’t even had a shot on target since December 2023, which says all you need to know about his style of play.

But, it’s worth noting that last night against Preston, the full-back only managed to play for two minutes. He picked up an injury almost immediately in the game and was taken off, so it’s pretty harsh that the record goes his way after such a brief and brutal evening.

Derby County are out of the drop zone, but injuries are piling up

Still, Nyambe will have been delighted to see his colleagues get the three points and climb out of the drop zone. It was a crucial win in the Championship relegation battle, and another sign that Eustace coming in was the right call all round.

Just a week ago, supercomputers predicted Derby would go down. Now, you’d be a fool to bet against the Rams.

But, there is one issue plaguing the team at the moment, and that is the injury situation, with Nyambe the latest to join the long list of crocked players.

Derby currently have David Ozoh, Dajaune Brown, Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, and Curtis Nelson all looking like they’ll miss the rest of the season, and Ben Osborn is out until May.

They also have Sondre Langas carrying a knock, Corey Blackett-Taylor struggling, and new signing Kemar Roofe facing a week or two on the sidelines.

With Nyambe now out, too, Eustace is going to have to muster everything he can from the remaining players for this important final run-in. Hopefully, the momentum Derby have generated will be enough to carry them through.
