There’s still time for Sheffield Wednesday to break into the play-offs this season, but Dom Howson doesn’t believe they’ve got what it takes right now.
Sheffield Wednesday have gone from midtable mediocrity to play-off hopefuls throughout the course of the season, but it seems the Owls are now looking likely to miss out on that dream.
The Championship is looking more competitive than ever this year, with multiple teams chasing a place in the top six.
While some neutrals suspect the automatic promotion race is over, Wednesday’s fate is still up in the air, but they are being held back by one problem, and one particular thing they are lacking, too.

Sheffield Wednesday need a proven goalscorer if they want to get promoted
Discussing the Owls’ chances of success this season, Dom Howson took to Twitter/X to share his opinion on where they are going wrong.
Howson said: “The chances are Sheffield Wednesday will come up short in their play-off quest. [They] concede too many goals and are missing a proven Championship goal-scorer.”
Indeed, don’t have any player challenging for the Championship Golden Boot race this season, with Josh Windass top of the pile at Hillsborough on ten goals. Super-sub Michael Smith is next with eight.
Meanwhile, summer signing Ike Ugbo is still yet to score a league goal this season, making him one of the biggest flops in the division this year.
However, Howson does believe there could be some hope, especially if Wednesday can defeat Sunderland on Friday night.
He added: “Danny Röhl won’t want the season to peter out. Beating Sunderland would give them a big psychological boost for the run-in.”

Danny Rohl has laid brilliant foundations for Sheffield Wednesday in 2025/26
The fact of the matter is Sheffield Wednesday have made huge progress this season, but they are still lacking the depth and quality to compete at the very top of the Championship table.
The Owls needed to sign at least another two players in the winter window — another defender, and someone who could lead the line up top — and failure to recruit will almost certainly cost them a top-six spot this season.

However, Danny Rohl has done a fantastic job in S6. He’s turned Wednesday into a genuine force at times, and they have no involvement in the relegation battle this year, which is a huge relief for the fans.
Sheffield Wednesday are improving rapidly. They even managed to break a 42-year curse by finally beating Swansea this season.
The blueprint is there for them to go on and be even better next season now. There’s some real quality in the squad, and with a few more additions in the summer, we will surely see the Owls in the mix for promotion in 2025/26 — if they can keep hold of Rohl, that is.
