EFL Board told best outcome of Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town replay as 39% majority emerges

We still don’t know what will happen with the Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town match that was abandoned last weekend, but Championship fans have spoken on the matter.

For the past week, the debate over what decision the EFL Board should come to for Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town has been raging.

Valerien Ismael wants the three points, having seen his team leading 1-0 with ten minutes to go. The fact they had an extra man also factors into the decision.

However, the likes of Ally McCoist and Jeff Stelling think the game should start again from scratch. It’s a tough one, but neutral fans think they know the answer.

Championship fans share verdict on Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town

Over on Reddit, the question was asked as to what should happen with the Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town replay. From 653 votes, a massive 259 (39.66%) believe the game should start from the 80th minute, with Ipswich down to ten men, and let things play out from there.

Interestingly, 240 fans (36.75%) suggested Blackburn should just get the three points. We’re pretty sure Rovers would take either of those two outcomes.

Only 21.29% (139 voters) think the game should be replayed from the beginning. Sadly, that ‘harsh’ decision is the most likely one the EFL Board will come to.

Among the comments, one Norwich City fan wrote: “I don’t really see how you can argue for Blackburn to be awarded the win when they were only a goal up with over 11% of the game still to be played. For me, still too much game time left to determine a result.”

A Bristol City supporter added: “I’m sorry but I can’t see anything but a full replay happening. Ipswich had absolutely no responsibility for the waterlogging, whereas the home side does carry at least a bit. It’s unfortunate and I would definitely prefer Blackburn get the win, but I also see playing just 15 minutes as untenable.”

Elsewhere, a Leeds United fan said: “Play the remaining time feels obviously fairest – gives Blackburn the advantage they deserve from the first 80 minutes, but doesn’t gift them something they didn’t fully earn.”

A Sheffield United supporter replied: “At the most it should be the remaining time played. Logically Blackburn should be awarded the win. So of course it’ll be entirely replayed from the start.”

EFL Board likely to ignore advice and order full replay

We expect a decision from the EFL Board by the end of the week. But, to add further drama, Valerien Ismael insists he never agreed with the referee’s choice to abandon the game.

While past instances of abandoned games have quite often led to the result being upheld, it’s hard to see that happening here.

There are simply too many mitigating factors at play. The red card for Ipswich, the fact there were ten minutes left with just one goal between the teams; it’s simply too hard to predict what those dying moments would have delivered.

Either way, one team is going to be unhappy. The only way to ensure true impartiality is to start again.
