EFL expert addresses ‘shocking’ Sheffield United problem that was not fixed in the transfer window

Sheffield United have struggled across the pitch under Ruben Selles, but one glaring concern has not been corrected, according to one EFL expert.

Sheffield United have endured a dire start to the 2025/26 Championship season, losing every single game so far under the stewardship of Ruben Selles.

The new Blades boss was always set to face lofty expectations after taking over from Chris Wilder, and he is yet to show any sign of improvement from last season, albeit under more difficult circumstances after a questionable recruitment process from Sheffield United.

One main concern for Sheffield United was the lack of defenders that Selles had at his disposal, which became clear after gameweek one as the Blades shipped four goals when starting Tyler Bidnon and Rhys Norrington-Davies at centre-back.

It took Sheffield United a while, but they have managed to rectify the centre-back depth concerns in the summer window. One EFL expert, however, believes that a glaring area of weakness was subsequently not addressed.

EFL expert believes Sheffield United attacking ‘problems’ have not been addressed

Sheffield United left recruitment late in the summer transfer window, but managed to bring in 14 players in total.

While that is a sizeable amount to arrive at Bramall Lane in the summer, Sheffield United have been told by EFL expert Justin Peach, via the Second Tier Podcast, that there was not enough emphasis on recruiting forwards.

On the podcast, Ryan Dilks asked Peach: “Sheffield United’s big problems in the last few games have been that they’ve been shocking going forward. Have they strengthened enough to change that?”

Peach replied: “I don’t think they have. So, I don’t think the problems they have have actually been addressed with this “panic buying”.

“Well, I guess the easiest thing we can do is compare them to last season, and obviously, they lost Rhian Brewster, an attacking player. Rak Sakyi was on loan from Crystal Palace. Has he been replaced? Ogbene may be the player to replace him.”

After four games of the Championship season, Sheffield United have scored just one goal, while conceding seven.

Danny Ings must spearhead the Blades’ attacking improvements

Sheffield United’s forward options consist of several options, most of whom are struggling with confidence amid this difficult period of results.

Tom Cannon, for example, has struggled immensely when leading the line for Sheffield United, continuing his woes from the previous campaign.

Ruben Selles requires a leader to get him out of the mess made, and he will hope that Danny Ings can provide some excellence and goalscoring instincts.

Ings has previously hit the heights in the Premier League, and Sheffield United supporters will be keen for him to reignite his career at Bramall Lane.
