EFL pundit says whether Leicester City will win Championship promotion after nine-point deduction

Leicester City have been relegated to the Championship and are still facing financial issues despite winning two cases last season.

It emerged earlier this week that Leicester City could be handed a nine-point deduction after they were charged by the Premier League with an alleged breach of profit and sustainability rules in relation to the 2023/24 season.

The Foxes are also yet to make a signing this summer, but they have now found a replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Marti Cifuentes was appointed Leicester manager on Tuesday, and one finance expert has discussed why the manager took a pay cut to join the Foxes.

Now, the Midlands outfit’s chances of winning promotion in 2025/26 have been mooted.

Leicester City Championship promotion prediction

Ordinarily, teams dropping down from the Premier League are among the favourites to go straight back up.

Even if they have to sell some of their bigger stars, these teams generally have a higher-quality squad and more money than the rest of the Championship.

A nine-point deduction would, of course, be a big blow in Leicester’s quest for a swift return to the top flight.

But EFL pundit Benjamin Bloom was upbeat about the Foxes’ winning promotion next term, even with the deduction, backing them to reach the play-offs.

He said: “How’s the squad, how is the manager, can they post 80, 85, 90 points and have a really good season, finish top two, could they do top two? They would need a big total, probably.

“Could they do playoffs? I think probably. Could they win the play-offs? We’ll see – a ball hasn’t been kicked yet.”

Leicester City transfer news

Leicester made just one signing during the 2025 winter transfer window, bringing in full-back Woyo Coulibaly.

They, along with the embargoed Sheffield Wednesday, are the only two teams yet to make a signing this summer.

But Leicester are being linked with transfers this week, with a move for Harry Toffolo mooted.

The Foxes are also thought to be monitoring Max Lowe, who could leave Wednesday for free.
