Former Blackburn Rovers star and recently retired footballer Elliott Bennett has opened up on his time at Ewood Park and one club decision that left him surplus to requirements.

Blackburn Rovers’ last few seasons have been turbulent to say the least, with various managerial and personnel changes in recent years.

Finances have been a key issue for Rovers, and it continues to be in the current summer window. The latest installment sees Blackburn Rovers struggle to cough up the £5million required for target Steve Kapuadi.

Off-the-field issues have surrounded Blackburn Rovers for many years, and it was one of the reasons why former player Elliott Bennett’s stay at the club ended. Nearly four years after leaving the club, he has finally opened up on his departure.

Former Blackburn Rovers star Elliott Bennett on why his desire to stay at the club was taken away

Elliott Bennett endured four-and-a-half seasons at Ewood Park, playing 192 games in all competitions for Blackburn Rovers. He was often a crucial member of the side, but, despite all that he gave to the club, his tenure ended sourly.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Bennett has finally opened up on his departure from Blackburn Rovers, and despite doing one thing for the benefit of the club, they still turned it down.

“I wanted 2 years & reduced my salary to save the club money. They said no and tried to cancel my final year salary over two years. It didn’t make sense. It wasn’t about money. I wanted to stay at Blackburn.”

After Blackburn, Bennett went on to play for Shrewsbury Town for a further three years before retirement from football.

Blackburn fans want one thing this season, it’s not necessarily promotion

Large quantities of the 2024/25 Championship season were successful for Blackburn Rovers, but it is safe to say that John Eustace’s departure somewhat derailed their efforts in gunning for the top six.

Of course, Blackburn fans will want success in the upcoming season, but promotion is by no means at the top of their priority list. All they would love to see this season is stability.

Having Valerien Ismael as head coach is a good start for Rovers, with his experience in the Championship. Providing that they can go about their business and build on last season without managerial changes and financial struggles stealing the headlines, Rovers fans will be glad.
