Sheffield United are going to have to do it all over again in 2025/26 after missing out on promotion last term, and their new owners may find patience running pretty thin among the fanbase if they don’t make the right decisions quickly.
The Blades fell at the final hurdle in 2024/25 campaign. Despite pushing both Leeds United and Burnley all the way, Chris Wilder’s men had to battle through the play-offs before falling to a late defeat to Sunderland at Wembley.
That result crushed Sheffield United fans, and ultimately led to Chris Wilder losing his job. Whether that was based on performances and failure to get promoted, or a disagreement over transfer strategy, though, is still unknown.
Now, Ruben Selles is in charge at Bramall Lane, but will he get the backing of the Sheffield United owners?

Kieran Maguire discusses Sheffield United’s new owners
To discuss the situation regarding the COH Sports group, who took over at Sheffield United in December, and what may happen in the immediate future for the club, EFL Analysis spoke to finance expert Kieran Maguire.
He said: “They’ve come in sort of under the radar. Sheffield United did have a points deduction last season that was due to poor cash management and not paying other clubs on time in respect of installments on transfers.
“Hopefully they can put that behind them now. Fans will always want owners to spend money and if they don’t deliver then the assessment is often emotional rather than analytical as far as the conclusions that are reached by the fans.
“I think that’s been a driving force amongst some of these concerns [the fans have had]. It’s a lot easier when it’s the bloke next door who’s bought your football club or it’s a lifelong fan. But when things start to go wrong, you question the owner’s commitment.”

Sheffield United’s transfer activity this summer is a concern
It’s safe to say that, so far, Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, the two men behind the COH Sports group at United, have not won over the Blades fanbase.
Sacking Wilder in the first place was a controversial and very unpopular decision, while transfer activity has been underwhelming, to say the least.
Reporter Alan Biggs questioned COH Sports for their strategy recently, and fans have also been bemused by the fact the club continues to sign unknown players from the Bulgarian league through their new data-driven model.
The imminent capture of Louie Barry would be a move in the right direction for Sheffield United, and there’s no denying that the Blades will still be up there come the end of the season.
However, both Rosen and Eltoukhy will need to show far more ambition if they are to satisfy the Bramall Lane faithful this season.
