Five managers Hull City may turn to as they prepare to sack Ruben Selles

The transfer managerial merry go round appears to be in full swing once again.

This time, it’s Hull City’s turn to be involved in the drama.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed that Ruben Selles is set to be sacked and that Tony Mowbray could be one of those under consideration to replace the former Reading manager.

Hull fans think it would be ‘insane’ to sack Selles given that he was able to steer the Tigers to Championship safety.

But, given the fact that trigger-happy owner Acun Ilicali sacked Liam Rosenior for just missing out on the Championship play-offs in the 2023/24 season.

So, with that, EFL Analysis have looked at five options that Hull may turn to if they do wield the managerial axe.

Five names who could become the new Hull City manager

Pedro Martins – Al-Gharafa

Former Portugal international Pedro Martins has history with the Hull manager role after previously being linked with the job and was a target before Rosenior was appointed instead.

In 2022, Ilicali confirmed on the Hull official website that ‘extensive discussions’ were held with Martins before deciding to take a different approach.

He’s a name that’s likely to crop up again although he would have to be willing to leave Qatari-based Al-Gharafa, where he is likely to have a luxury salary and a handful of talented players, including former Cardiff City midfielder Aaron Gunnarsson.

Phillip Cocu – Without a club

Since Ilicali became owner of Hull, the club has seen an influx of players who have played in Turkey’s domestic leagues, as well managers who have been in charge of Turkish Super Lig sides.

Phillip Cocu fits that mould and has previously been in charge of Fenerbahce, a club close to Ilicali’s heart.

Cocu has previously managed in England too with Derby County and now out of work since leaving the troubled Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem, meaning that negotiations would be, in theory, easier.

Damien Duff – Shelbourne

Another one with links to Ilicali, Damien Duff is in charge of League of Ireland side Shelbourne – a team the Hull owner previously had a stake in.

Duff defied the odds and guided Shelbourne to their first league title since 2006 in an entertaining end-of-season battle.

The Republic of Ireland international has extensive knowledge of the English football pyramid and can get teams punching above his weight. It would also be considered as a logical stepping stone with a view to getting a top flight job in the future.

Carlos Carvalhal – Braga

A name familiar to Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City fans, Carlos Carvalhal back in the Championship would be an interesting prospect.

It would be the most ambitious of the appointments as Carvehal is currently managing in his homeland of Portgual with Braga, a team who often compete for the European spots.

Carvalhal knows how to deal with hands-on owners too and get the best out of a squad with limited resources.

The former Wednesday boss has managed 21 clubs already though, which could be perceived as a potential red flag and someone that wouldn’t be a long-term appointment.

Ryan Mason – Tottenham Hotspur

One option Hull could do is revert to the model that found Rosenior.

Not only is Ryan Mason a former player for the Tigers, he’s also made his mark on coaching with the Tottenham Hotspur academy.

Mason has also been an interim manager for Spurs in recent times and is on the first-team coaching staff alongside Ange Postecoglou.

He knows how to appease to the fans and would see this as a great platform to begin his senior management career.
