Hull City boss Ruben Selles did one brilliant thing after he clinched the Tigers’ survival in the Championship.
The final day of the 2024/25 Championship season saw plenty of turmoil, as expected, in the lower echelons of the league table.
Hull City drew with Portsmouth, which was enough to keep them in the Championship, despite going into the final day in the bottom three following a defeat to Derby County.
A 1-1 stalemate for Hull City meant that they had to rely on either Derby County, Preston North End, or Luton Town to suffer defeat, with the latter falling to a 5-3 loss against West Brom, meaning that the Hatters will be playing League One football following back-to-back relegations.
After Hull City’s vital point on the road, Tigers boss Ruben Selles was spotted by a journalist in the midst of one ‘lovely’ family moment.

The moment Hull City boss Ruben Selles celebrated survival with family following Portsmouth draw
After notching a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park, celebrations ensued in the packed-out Hull City end, with fans, players, and staff enjoying, not quite the success of survival, but more the relief of such an achievement.
Once things quietened down, Selles was set to take an interview, which beforehand he contacted his family to tell them the brilliant news of the club’s survival.
On the phone with his son, Selles started singing ‘we are staying up’ in celebration after his side’s brilliant display against Portsmouth.

Ruben Selles should be admired for job since taking over
Taking over from the difficult situation that Tim Walter’s appointment at the start of the season left the club in was always going to be a huge challenge for Selles, with the club sleepwalking towards relegation amid injuries sustained by several key players.
Nonetheless, Selles has impeccably managed to steer the club away from relegation to League One, albeit in rather dramatic circumstances.
Hull City, since Selles took over, find themselves in 12th place when taking into account only games since the Portuguese coach joined the club, a reflection that they have been more than satisfactory since he joined the club.
Arguably, Hull City under Selles haven’t quite had enough ferocity in the final third, but that should come with this summer’s recruitment and the return of key attacking players from injury.
