Hull City fans are all saying the same thing after securing Championship safety vs Portsmouth

The Championship served up tons of drama on the final day, particularly in the relegation battle, where Hull City scrapped for their lives.

Hull travelled to Portsmouth knowing that a win would secure their Championship safety after an abysmal downfall following the sacking of Liam Rosenior.

The visiting supporters to Fratton Park were sent into pandemonium when Matt Crooks scored in the first half to give them the lead, a goal which saw them climb out of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, with Luton Town losing to West Brom, just a point would have also been enough, and when Christian Saydee equalised just after half-time, Hull fans were fearing a capitulation on the South Coast.

But, despite enduring a nerve-shredding final half an hour, Ruben Selles men held out for a draw, which confirmed their safety for another campaign.

Hull City fans react after securing Championship survival

From finishing in seventh under Rosenior to fighting against dropping into League One, it’s been a dramatic downfall in the past year, with Hull fans blaming owner Acun Ilicali for their current mess.

However, after staying up on goal difference, the resounding verdict is one of relief after a very poor season.

“Thank god for that, not sure on his tactics once we got in the lead, but we got over the line thanks to West Brom,” one fan wrote.

“Never in doubt – Never again. A wretched season. Big clear out needed. At least the rebuild is as a Championship club,” another said.

“Many, many mistakes have been made both on and off the pitch but now it’s over. It’s about looking to next season and get some key players back!!” someone exclaimed, looking ahead to next season.

“Fratton Park in the sun is quite the setting for survival isn’t it?” another commented while a sixth stated: “Didn’t clap the players at the end; Let’s not forget what a torrid season we have had to watch. Happy to be here next year though.”

Hull need a clear out in the summer

The financial implications for being relegated didn’t bear thinking about, and instead, there’s relief that Hull managed to survive by their skin.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, a huge clear out of players is needed for the fourth year running, with a solid recruitment strategy also required.

Getafe and Valencia are already interested in signing Steven Alzate, who joined the Tigers on a free transfer in September, while other players could follow.

But most importantly, Selles will welcome back influential wingers Mohamed Belloumi and Liam Millar in pre-season, and those two players are massive.

It’s fair to say that if the duo didn’t suffer season-ending injuries, Hull wouldn’t be anywhere near the bottom three.
