It’s make or break for Hull City in their fight for Championship survival this weekend as the relegation battle reaches an intense finale.
When Acun Ilicali sacked Liam Rosenior last May after Hull finished outside the play-offs by just three points, few predicted the Tigers would be battling for their Championship status a year later.
But the poor managerial appointment of Tim Walter and a series of terrible decisions in the transfer window have created a disastrous downfall.
On Saturday, Hull’s 1-0 defeat to Derby County was the writing on the wall for many supporters, who felt that relegation to League One was unavoidable.

However, when Hull visit Portsmouth this weekend, Ruben Selles knows that a win keeps them up by the skin of their teeth, while a draw at Fratton Park and defeats for Luton Town or Preston North End would also see them finish above the dotted line on goal difference.

Steven Alzate set to leave Hull City amid interest from Valencia and Getafe
Ahead of the relegation showdown on Saturday, preparations have been far from ideal. Selles chose to give the players an extra day off after the defeat against the Rams, while they also received their wages two days late this week following an overseas payment issue.
Supporters are now fearing for the future of their football club as relegation to League One would be a massive blow financially, with the club already posting losses of almost £600,000 per month.
The build-up to their biggest game in years has also been dominated by potential player exits. Some have already looked like downing tools to force a summer move, and one of those is midfielder Steven Alzate, who is nailed on to depart the MKM Stadium.
According to AS Colombia, the 26-year-old has rejected several offers from Championship clubs as he prefers a move to La Liga with Valencia and Getafe reportedly interested in the former Brighton talent.
Hull captured Alzate on a free transfer following his release from the Seagulls in September 2024, and he’s since become a vital cog in City’s midfield, appearing 28 times in the second tier and posting a passing accuracy of 86%.
Unfortunately for the supporters watching on, the Colombian isn’t the only star set to exit the club this summer, as many players could follow.
Hull City set for a mass exodus of players
The turnover of players since Ilicali tookover the club in January 2022 has been mind-blowing, and the club could be forced into a similar strategy this summer.
Relegation to League One could force a mass exodus of players, seeing a lot of their current squad leave the club this summer.
That list includes Joao Pedro, Dogukan Sinik, Gustavo Puerta, Ivor Pandur, Charlie Hughes, Regan Slater, Alfie Jones and Nordin Amrabat, who could all leave the MKM Stadium.
Some supporters will be glad to see the back of multiple players on that list, particularly the out-of-contract Sinik, but they aren’t happy that another huge rebuild is needed for the fourth year running.
