Championship expert reveals major Hull City ‘concern’ as he shares Portsmouth score prediction

It’s all or nothing for Hull City when they head to Portsmouth on the final day of the Championship season.

The Championship relegation battle served up fresh twists and turns last time out. Luton’s 2-1 win over Coventry City gave the Hatters a fighting chance ahead of their clash against West Brom.

A win for Matt Bloomfield’s men will confirm their safety after a difficult season, and that is the same equation for Hull City, who were beaten 1-0 by Derby County last weekend.

The Tigers served up a pretty atrocious performance at the MKM Stadium after recording just two attempts on target and an xG of just 0.40.

Ruben Selles’ side must be much improved at Fratton Park this weekend, otherwise, relegation to League One will be staring them in the face.

Sam Parkin issues Portsmouth vs Hull City prediction

Hull travel to a Portsmouth side who have nothing to play for, and that should work in their favour as they need a win to guarantee survival.

Supporters making the long trip South will be fearing the worst ahead of kick-off, though, as Hull have won just one of their previous 20 final-day matches, excluding play-off campaigns, with that victory coming in 2015/16 against Rotherham United.

The East Yorkshire outfit typically take their feet off the gas ahead of the final day, but they must go all guns blazing at Fratton Park, something that can’t be said when assessing their season as a whole.

Ahead of their huge showdown against Portsmouth, EFL expert Sam Parkin is concerned about the Tigers lack of goal-scoring threat but has tipped them to come away with a 2-0 victory.

“I’m going to go for Hull to win,” Parkin said on the Championship Check-In podcast. “You know, Portsmouth got that good point at Hillsborough, despite safety already being achieved.

“My only concern is that Hull are not scoring goals. Well, they’ve scored three, I think, in the last kind of half a dozen games or something. One was a header from a set piece and two penalties.

“So there’s no goals going in from open play. They’re in every game. You know, they’re very tight margins.

“Their fixtures show you that they’ve improved defensively, or they’re in a decent place defensively. I’m going to go for it to be relatively comfortable and a rare off day for Portsmouth at Fratton Park, nil, two.”

Hull’s lack of threat could cost them relegation

Hull lack quality attacking spark in the final third, as the Tigers often fashion promising positions but don’t have anyone who can put the ball in the back of the net.

Leeds United loanee Joe Gelhardt has shown promise since joining on loan in January by scoring five times, while Joao Pedro remains their top scorer with a measly six.

Joao Pedro – 6 goals
Joe Gelhardt – 5 goals
Abu Kamara – 5 goals
Chris Bedia – 3 goals
Mason Burstow – 2 goals

Considering it’s the end of a 46-game campaign, that is a worryingly low total, and one that could cost City in the relegation battle.

Ultimately, the Championship’s second-lowest scorers need a moment of magic at Fratton Park, but supporters won’t be confident of any player stepping up after watching them blank against Derby.
