‘Totally ruined it’ – Sky Sports pundit reacts to Coventry City’s defeat to Luton Town

Matt Bloomfield’s Luton Town took another huge step towards safety but could condemn Coventry City and Frank Lampard to missing out on the play-offs in the process.

Lampard was left fuming at the referee, and his gameplan went out of the window early on after Jay Dasilva’s red card after 13 minutes. However, it was 10 against 10 for much of the second-half before Shandon Baptiste netted the winner.

Liam Walsh saw red but Isaiah Jones could also have been sent off for a kick out not long after. Instead, Matt Bloomfield, a manager once linked to the Coventry City job, stopped Lampard’s side from completing the league double over Luton.

It looked as though experts would be correct after they had backed Luton to win before the game, due to Luton’s start to the game against ten men. But they were made to work for it, securing a vital three points late on to increase their survival chances for the 2025/26 Championship season.

Curtis Davies’ frustration for Frank Lampard made clear after Luton Town loss

The sending off early and the lack of a red for Jones proved to be the major talking points. The Sky Sports studio included the likes of Chris Iwelumo and Curtis Davies who discussed the damage of the defeat for Coventry.

Iwelumo said: “It’s difficult when you get a man sent off. Straight away, the whole outcome has to change. You think, ‘okay, we’re happy with a point. Just don’t concede. We’re going to have moments in the game to capitalise on.’

“Once it goes to 10v10, he’s changed a few things tactically to try and get something out of the game.”

Davies added: “I think there’s still context to it as well. If they get a point today, it’s still in their hands — in terms of they could draw against Middlesbrough on the last day.

“Now, if Middlesbrough win, they jump in that place and Middlesbrough can afford to draw on last day. So, the psychology of it, as well as obviously the placing, has totally ruined it for Frank for the last weekend.”

The stats for Coventry City’s defeat to Luton Town paint a clear picture of who deserved win

The game would’ve perhaps been different 11 against 11 but there’s no doubting who deserved to win based on the balance of play over 90 minutes as a whole.

It was a dominant performance from the home side, with the visitors putting in a backs to the wall display to try and salvage something, which the data outlines.

Luton have now won the last three in a row and lost just twice in 11 matches. It has been a well-timed run of form, and something Coventry need to emulate for the final game of the season and then beyond into the play-offs if they defeat Middlesbrough.
