Frank Lampard has dropped a major hint on his plans for young Coventry City star Kai Andrews.

The midfielder returned from a loan spell with Motherwell last season and has been involved with the first-team squad.

Andrews has played in the Carabao Cup and been on the bench for Coventry, which even led him to make his senior international debut for Wales.

He needs regular game time and the idea of going out on loan again could benefit him.

Frank Lampard sees Kai Andrews as part of his Coventry squad

Lampard has been managing Andrews’ minutes and now that former club captain Ben Sheaf departed for Wrexham, a new space in the side has opened up.

For the Coventry boss, that’s an opportunity for the 20-year-old to take and continue his development in the Championship.

“He’s a good player, still very, very young but he can be a competitive player for us. He can challenge and will improve,” he told the Coventry Telegraph.

“I think it was important that we kept him here to train with us to be valuable to the squad, to hopefully impact and yeah, the boost of making his debut, I understand what that would feel like and mean to him.

“So it’s a great thing and he’s a valued member of the squad, which is great for us to have young talent that have come through here. There’s something to that in terms of the energy, the positive energy they bring to the group and the fans want to see it. Those are all good things, so I’m pleased for Kai.”

Frank Lampard must win in M69 derby

This weekend will be the first time that Lampard experiences a taste of the M69 derby against Leicester City.

Despite winning the previous meeting 3-1, this fixture has traditionally been a depressing one for the Sky Blues.

Leicester will be seen as fellow promotion rivals but still look raw under manager Marti Cifuentes and are potentially there for the taking.

If there is one game he needs to win, it is this one.
