Frank Lampard’s admission of what Coventry City need ahead of summer transfer deadline

Coventry City have made an unbeaten start to the new Championship season under Frank Lampard, with the club setting their sights on a campaign in which they battle for promotion once again.

The Sky Blues celebrated a 7-1 victory over QPR at the weekend, on the same day they confirmed they had agreed a deal to buy the CBS Arena, 20 years on from their first game in the stadium.

While fans of Coventry City will be dreaming of them returning to the English top flight, it must be remembered that they have not competed in the Premier League since 2001, ending a 34-year run in that division.

Frank Lampard had looked set to lose his star full-back Milan Van Ewijk, as a deal seemed to have been agreed for him to join Wolfsburg; however, it fell apart as it stalled, and the German club completed a deal for another full-back.

While this may be positive news, Frank Lampard has opened up about what they need to get from the transfer window before it closes on September 1.

Frank Lampard admits Coventry City need depth

Frank Lampard has admitted that Coventry need to sign some players to deepen the squad from which he can choose.

This admission came after their defeat to Millwall in the Carabao Cup, as the Coventry manager made several changes to the squad that started the fixture at the weekend against QPR.

Speaking with Coventry Live, he said: “Yeah, that’s true, but we do need the squad as well. We need to have strength in depth for the squad through the season.

“People are getting excited about our start to the season, but we will need the strength and depth through the season because midweek games will come in the Championship, not just because of the Carabao Cup.

“So, when you see that and you make changes, you also want to see the levels stay as what they were. It was good that the players came on and made an impact. But yeah, the disappointment is that we didn’t feel that in the first half of the game so much.”

The position Frank Lampard is targeting

The Sky Blues boss has previously spoken about the need for the club to sign centre halves and wide players, with Coventry being linked to Fulham’s 22-year-old attacker Martial Godo.

However, they have also been linked to Charlie Hughes from Hull City, emphasising just where they are targeting in terms of recruitment.

This emphasis on this position may also have to do with the interest around their defender Bobby Thomas, who has several clubs after his signature.
