After Grimsby Town’s historic win against Man United, they have been warned that a visit to Sheffield Wednesday may not be as glamorous as it could appear.
Grimsby Town shook the English football landscape with a brilliant home win against Man United.
After leading 2-0 courtesy of goals by Mariners pair Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, Grimsby were soon pegged back by the Premier League side after Bryan Mbuemo and Harry Maguire notched goals to take it to penalties.
A long-winded shoot-out saw Christy Pym cover himself in glory after saving Matheus Cunha’s decisive spot-kick, taking it to sudden death. It was eventually won when Man United’s Bryan Mbuemo missed from the spot.
It proved to be a night that will stand out in Grimsby’s history, but they will be dragged right back down to earth in their visit to Sheffield Wednesday in the next round for one clear reason.

Grimsby Town ‘reward’ hampered by Dejphon Chansiri mishandling of Sheffield Wednesday
After Grimsby Town toppled Ruben Amorim’s flimsy Man United side, they have been drawn an away tie to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.
As a League Two team, getting a Championship draw would normally come with excitement, but the prospects of that are pretty low due to the discontent stirring in S6.
Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has become a figure of ridicule in South Yorkshire after a series of late-paid wages to staff, whilst the state of Hillsborough Stadium was left in uncertainty after one of the stands was condemned before the season.
It was summed up best by Sheffield Wednesday reporter Joe Crann on X, who said: “Congratulations Grimsby Town, your reward for knocking out one of the biggest clubs in the world in the most dramatic fashion is a trip to an empty stadium to play against a bunch of really fired up U21s.”
Sheffield Wednesday fans boycotted their home clash against Leeds United in the cup, and it is expected that they will do the same against Grimsby Town.

How much Grimsby Town are set to receive following EFL Cup victory
For teams of a similar stature to Grimsby Town, the financial benefits can make a significant difference.
Their win against Man United will have helped pocket the Mariners £7,000, and a £10,000 cash prize will be at stake for the third round tie against Sheffield Wednesday.
The money will make a difference to Grimsby, but in the wake after such a magical night for the football club, that is the last thing on their mind.
We often see lower league teams written off when they face Premier League sides, but Grimsby Town weathered the storm incredibly, with the team putting in a phenomenal showing.
