How Bristol City can secure their play-off place against Luton Town

There’s a huge chance for Bristol City to secure their place in the play-offs today.

The Robins have had an excellent Championship campaign and sit fifth in the table with only three games of the season remaining.

Their Easter Monday opponents Luton Town meanwhile are on the hunt for survival after an important win against relegation rivals Derby County last time out.

Luton have an excellent home record against Bristol City and haven’t lost to them at Kenilworth Road in over 20 years.

Bristol City are so close to securing that play-off spot and could actually do so today – providing a few things happen.

What do Bristol City need to do secure a play-off place

For the Robins, three points at Luton will take their total to 70 points with two games remaining.

The side who are closest to breaking into the top six are Middlesbrough with 63 points, currently three points behind Coventry City and four behind City.

That means, if Michael Carrick’s men fail to beat Sheffield Wednesday and the Robins beat Luton, Liam Manning’s side will officially confirm their spot in the top six.

Failure to win at Kenilworth Road though would mean that Bristol City would have to wait an extra week – even if Boro draw or lose – to be sure of a top six spot.

When was the last time Bristol City were in the play-offs?

It’s been a long time since the west country club have had to contend with the play-off places.

In fact, you have to go all the way back to the 2007/08 season, when they reached the final, only to be beaten by Hull City.

Dean Windass’ wonder-strike was the difference between the two on the afternoon and ever since then, it’s largely been consistent mid-table finishes.

Maybe that’s all about to change.
