How much prize money Grimsby Town stand to earn from Carabao Cup run as Brentford await

Grimsby Town have been the feel-good story of the Carabao Cup so far this season, but how far can they go? And how much money will they earn from that run?

The Carabao Cup is often seen as a lesser competition, with Premier League teams fielding weaker lineups. Indeed, for some, progress in the cup is something they could take or leave.

For teams across the EFL though, it’s a chance to show what they’re made of. Giant-killings make headlines, cup runs delight the fans, and the financial benefits aren’t bad, either.

Even as neutrals, we’ve loved watching Grimsby Town’s magical adventure in the EFL Cup this season. Grimsby overcame Man Utd’s mega squad in the second round, before dumping out Sheffield Wednesday last week.

So, just how much prize money have the Mariners earned so far?

Grimsby Town are already £22,000 richer thanks to Carabao Cup exploits

A 3-1 win for Grimsby against Shrewsbury Town in the first round of the cup earned them £5,000.

Then, those ‘epic scenes’ for the win over Man Utd brought in another £7,000 in prize money. Of course, the media attention that victory brought may well have topped that figure up a bit, too.

From there, a relatively empty Hillsborough stadium awaited Grimsby as they took on Sheffield Wednesday in the third round.

RoundPrize money
First Round Winners£5,000
Second Round Winners£7,000
Third Round Winners£10,000
Fourth Round Winners£15,000
Quarter-finalists£25,000
Semi-finalists£25,000
Runners-up£50,000
The Winners£100,000

While David Artell didn’t like the distressed state of Sheffield Wednesday on the night, he will have been pretty happy to earn Grimsby another £10,000. That takes their total earnings for this cup run to £22,000 so far.

Next up is another potential Premier League victim, with a home clash against Brentford in the fourth round. Win that, and not only will Grimsby make it to the quarter-finals, they’ll also net another £15,000 to add to their kitty.

Finance expert on Grimsby Town winnings

To really dig into these numbers, we spoke to our resident finance expert Adam Williams, who explained Grimsby Town’s overall finances and the impact of this cup run.

Williams said: “For context, Grimsby’s total revenue in the last financial year was £5.72m. They also lost £1.68m that year, so while every pound they earn improves their margin and reduces the amount the owners have to stump up to fund the club, £22k isn’t particularly significant.

“However, that’s just prize money. There are other sources of money in the League Cup. Each club gets 45% of net gate receipts from each match, for example, with the remaining 10% going to a central pot, which is then evenly distributed to every Premier League and EFL club at the end of the season. When you add that 10% up over 93 League Cup matches, that’s relatively significant.

“Also, the EFL TV deal underpins the whole of the financial ecosystem that Grimsby operate within, and the League Cup broadcast rights are included within that. So it is more financially significant for lower-league clubs than people realise.”

Five EFL teams remain in League Cup

Grimsby are one of just five EFL teams still in the Carabao Cup now. They’re joined by Swansea City, who face Man City next.

One of the most fascinating ties of the next round sees Wrexham host Welsh rivals Cardiff City. So, we know at least one EFL team will be in the quarter-finals.

There’s also a spot for Wycombe Wanderers, who have put their poor league form aside to book a fourth-round tie against Fulham.

The fourth-round fixtures are:

Games will be played in the week commencing October 27th. While the likes of Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur will be a major draw, we’ll be keeping our eyes on Grimsby Town to see if they can march on.
