Ipswich Town star points to the ‘pivotal’ advantage they have in the Championship promotion race

Ipswich Town have been identified as one of the favourites for the Championship title, with promotion the minimum expectation from experts on the division.

Kieran McKenna has assembled quite the squad over the past number of seasons, with the Northern Irishman presumably confident of winning promotion with his team this campaign.

It has not gone all his way in the transfer window, as he had to bid farewell to Liam Delap as he left to join Chelsea for £30 million.

Ipswich now look likely to be bolstering their squad with a Champions League midfielder, as Jens Cajuste looks set to be joining from Napoli.

As the Tractor Boys look to move back to the Premier League with a promotion campaign this season, that seems to be the ambition within the squad, as confirmed by one of their stars.

Alex Palmer believes the Ipswich squad make-up is their advantage in the promotion race

The Ipswich Town goalkeeper has told the East Anglian Daily Times that he believes that promotion is the measurement of success for Ipswich Town this season.

Alex Palmer believes the make-up of experience and youth in the squad will be key to Ipswich Town getting promoted.

The 28-year-old understands that for the first time in a long time, Ipswich are considered favourites to achieve success going into a campaign.

He said: “I think we can only relish that. Teams are going to make it difficult for us this season, but that’s where we’re going to make sure that we’re on it; we go into it with a clear structure.

“Obviously, it’s going to be a tough season. No Championship season is ever easy, so we’re going to be ready for it, and I can’t wait for Friday.

“That’s what we’re aiming for, and we want to keep on that rise, albeit that we obviously had a difficult season last season.

“But I still feel like the club’s taking steps in the right direction, so fingers crossed we can just keep building as a team and get better and better.

“We’ve got a lot of Championship experience here, and we’re still quite a young squad, and that’s going to prove pivotal.”

Contenders for the Championship title

According to the betting odds, Ipswich Town are favourites for the Championship title, with their closest rival being Southampton.

The six favourites for the title include the three clubs relegated from the Premier League last year, with Leicester City being considered as outsiders for the league.

Birmingham City, who Ipswich Town face in the Championship opener, are viewed as third favourites for the title.

The other two clubs being considered for the title are Sheffield United, who lost the play-off final last season, and Coventry City.
