Coventry City are flying high in the Championship and one of their midfielders has beaten league rivals Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney in a key stat this season.

Frank Lampard’s side sit sixth in the second tier after five games, and their attacking displays have got experts predicting Coventry to go up automatically this season, with them hitting seven past Queens Park Rangers and five beyond Derby County.

The reports of midfielder Jack Rudoni signing a new bumper contract with the Sky Blues were music to Coventry fans’ ears.

However, it’s another City ace that is topping the league in an important statistic.

Matt Grimes given Coventry City armband by Frank Lampard

Coventry captain Ben Sheaf left the club for Wrexham this summer, with the Sky Blues earning £6.5million on his transfer.

After leading by example on the pitch, Grimes was given the armband as a result, with Liam Kitching receiving the vice-captaincy.

He said: “It’s an honour to be named captain of this football club. It’s such a brilliant group and I’ve felt the love from them and the supporters since I’ve been here and to be asked to lead that, I’m really honoured.

“It’s a real privilege to be asked by the Gaffer and to be trusted at such a huge club, with an amazing fan base, I’m really proud. I’m looking forward to leading the team out this weekend for the first time. It’s something I’ve done before in my past, but I feel like it feels a bit more special, to come into the group earlier in the year and now to be selected by the Gaffer, it’s truly a proud moment for me.”

Grimes will be hoping to lead his side to victory against local rivals Leicester City on Saturday.
