Josh Windass left Sheffield Wednesday for newly promoted Wrexham this summer, and the forward has chronicled his best memory of his Owls stint.

Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham may be two of the 24 teams that make up the Championship table for the 2025/26 campaign, but the feelings around the clubs could not be any different.

Wrexham made history with successive promotions last season under manager Phil Parkinson, and are looking to do the unfathomable and reach the Premier League next season.

However, the Owls’ ongoing financial crisis under owner Dejphon Chansiri has put the historic club in peril and has resulted in a summer exodus from Hillsborough Stadium.

One of many Owls figures to depart this summer was Josh Windass, who has joined Wrexham, and now the forward has lifted the lid on his best memory from his time at Sheffield Wednesday.

Josh Windass reveals his best Sheffield Wednesday memory after Wrexham move

Windass and Michael Smith terminated their contracts at Sheffield Wednesday this summer with the club in economic crisis.

Windass joined Wrexham last week to support the Welsh giants in their top flight promotion quest, ending the attacker’s five-and-a-half-year stint with Sheffield Wednesday.

Since joining the Owls in January 2020, initially on loan from Wigan Athletic before the move was made permanent the following summer, Windass scored 53 goals and registered 22 assists in 183 appearances in all competitions.

After campaigns in League One and the Championship with the Owls, Windass has revealed that his most treasured memory of his time at the club was the infamous League One play-off semi-final second leg comeback win against Peterborough United.

When asked about his best memory, Windass told his YouTube channel: “Probably the Peterborough game…

“I actually had a good memory of playing here with Rangers. That was the first time I’d played at Hillsborough before. And obviously, we brought 14,000 fans. I scored, but even then I was thinking the stadium is unbelievable, I’d love to play here one day.

“Luckily a few years later, I obviously signed for the club. So I never thought that after five years that I’ve been here, I’d be the top-scoring midfielder in the club’s history.

“Aiden Flint header, Palms (Liam Palmer) scored. I just remember it was absolutely rocking in here, it was an unbelievable night. The pitch was unbelievable. Everyone put 100% in, and the game plan the manager came up with worked.

“We have had some good games on this pitch, and maybe I’ll come back and play here one day. Who knows? So we’ll see.

“He actually said we just need to score a goal every 22-and-a-half minutes or something mad.

“When he broke it down like that, all the lads were like this guy’s off his head. We’ve just been battered 4-0.

“But we got two in the first 20 minutes I think. So we cut half the time off, and then this place was bouncing. I think when we scored the second, obviously we knew what was happening, their players knew what was happening.

“So yeah, it was unbelievable from the manager. It’s hard to implement belief in a squad of players when you’re that score line down, but he did it that night… the penalty shootout and the scenes at the end.”

Not only was Windass present for one of the most historic nights in EFL history, but he also completed the dramatic story with the decisive goal in the ensuing play-off final.

Josh Windass will always be a Sheffield Wednesday legend after play-off final goal

Of all of Windass’ 53 goals in an Owls jersey, the 123rd-minute winner in the League One play-off final against Barnsley is the most important from a Sheffield Wednesday perspective.

In the final embers of the Wembley showpiece, Windass dispatched a deft header from 12 yards out to send the Owls back to the Championship at the expense of Barnsley.

Despite his goalscoring prowess, Windass misses out on entering Sheffield Wednesday’s all-time top scorers list by just 13 goals, a target he could have very well hit come the end of the 2025/26 season.

Windass shared a message to Sheffield Wednesday fans following his move to Wrexham, and the emotion in his parting statement will be mirrored by the Hillsborough faithful, given the former Rangers forward’s impact in his time at the Owls.
