Sheffield Wednesday are in a dire mess right now, so much so that even their fiercest rivals are starting to feel a little sympathy for the Owls.
Things have gone from bad to worse for Sheffield Wednesday this summer, with Dejphon Chansiri’s failure to make payments to staff, players, and HMRC on time causing a domino effect that has left the club in a perilous situation.
Amid quickfire sales, contract terminations, and EFL restrictions on transfers, Henrik Pedersen has been left with a threadbare squad to carry the Owls through the season, and it’s not looking good.
Despite some promising performances, Wednesday have now lost their first two league games and the threat of relegation is a distinct reality this season.
There could be further implications if this situation is not resolved, with more punishments potentially on the way from the EFL including points deductions. And, as we’ve seen far too many times, clubs can spiral out of control from this point.

Leeds United fans want Sheffield Wednesday to recover from Chansiri chaos
Last week, we celebrated the classy gesture from Bolton Wanderers fans as they hosted Wednesday in the Carabao Cup with a positive show of support for the ongoing crisis. Now, it’s Leeds United’s turn to speak up on behalf of the Owls.
With the two clubs drawn against one another in the next round of the Carabao Cup, one Leeds supporter took to Twitter/X to write: “The rivalry between Leeds and Wednesday is what everyone from South and West Yorkshire wants. But for anyone that thinks what is happening at Hillsborough at the minute is OK… just remember, out of the 72 in the EFL in 2007 Wednesday were one of 15 to vote against us getting a -15 points deduction.”
Among the replies, one fan said, “These rivalries are what makes football great. As much as we hate other clubs we shouldn’t want them to disappear,” while another added, “I’m not one for celebrating other’s misfortune when it comes to owners.”
Others wrote, “Great point. I really feel for them. It’s disgusting what he has done to that historic club,” and “I haven’t forgotten, I really hope they get sorted! Intelligent post.”
The crux of the matter is summed up perfectly by one very simple message from one of the Leeds fans, who said: “Any ‘true’ football fan doesn’t want to see another fan’s club in the mire.”

Why the downfall of Sheffield Wednesday is a bad thing for football
You only have to look at the horrific situation unfolding at Morecambe FC to see how cataclysmic this chain of events right now could end up being.
Sheffield Wednesday are a club with a rich history and a massive fanbase, and it’s really, objectively unfair for that group of supporters to be going through what they are right now.
If Chansiri continues to stall on a sale of the club, there is only one direction Wednesday will go, and that is down. Relegation feels like an inevitability already, and there’s every reason to believe the Owls could keep on dropping unless they get new owners.
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of healthy rivalry, but as the Leeds fans say, no one should ever want to see a great establishment like Sheffield Wednesday at risk of extinction. That may feel like a long way off at the moment, but that fate has an awful habit of creeping up on clubs.
