It may be surprising to discover the longest-serving EFL manager, they’re 12 years ahead of Wrexham’s Phil Parkinson

In football, the head coach and manager position can change very quickly – particularly in the EFL.

This summer has been a frantic one, with Tom Cleverley being sacked by Watford just after the 2024/25 season ended, while Marti Cifuentes was finally replaced at QPR by Julien Stephan.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy departed Leicester City at the end of June, while Liam Manning is looking to bring Premier League football back to Norwich City after he left Bristol City following their play-off semi-final defeat to Sheffield United.

For others, however, it has been a very calm close-season and EFL Analysis has taken a look at the manager who is currently the longest-serving among the 72 sides in the Championship, League One and League Two.

Simon Weaver is the longest serving manager in the EFL

To find the longest serving manager in the EFL you’ll have to go to League Two and to North Yorkshire.

Simon Weaver has spent the last 16 years and nearly two months at Harrogate Town, taking charge of the Sulphurites in May 2009 while the side were playing in the Conference North (now known as the National League North).

His father, Irving, took over as chairman two years later and since then the club have climbed to League Two, and they finished 18th in 2024/25.

This is Harrogate’s only ever stint in the EFL to date, having won promotion to the fourth tier through the play-offs in 2020.

Wrexham’s Phil Parkinson comes in fourth on the list

Weaver has had a spectacular run at Harrogate and nobody comes close to matching his tenure, with Nigel Clough second in the list having taken charge of Mansfield Town in November 2020 – four years and eight months ago.

Phil Parkinson has overseen three successive promotions at Wrexham, having taken charge of the club in July 2021 – with the ex-Bradford City manager seeing in his fourth anniversary at the Racecourse Ground with his team in the Championship.

Surprisingly, Danny Rohl is in the top 15 longest serving EFL managers, having only taken charge of Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023. The German has told his players that he will leave the Owls this summer, although his next destination is yet to be found.

Nevertheless, nobody comes close to Simon Weaver and his impressive record is a real eye-opener to managers elsewhere.
