Danny Rohl takes significant action as Sheffield Wednesday saga edges closer to conclusion

It’s been a difficult summer so far for Sheffield Wednesday and it looks as though their situation is only becoming more complex.

The Owls failed to pay their players in May, and some non-playing staff had to take up emergency funding to help get by in what has been a tough few months.

The EFL put a three-window transfer ban on the club, with the South Yorkshire outfit unable to pay fees for either permanent or loan signings until January 2027.

Leicester City are admirers of manager Danny Rohl and while the way the Foxes handled Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s sacking was slammed, they are keen to bring in the German to replace the former Manchester United striker. Now, in a fresh update, they may just be getting closer.

Danny Rohl informs the Sheffield Wednesday players that he will leave

Rohl’s departure has felt like a matter of when, not if, throughout the last few months, but a conclusion to this saga looks as though it is just around the corner.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, the 36-year-old has now told the Sheffield Wednesday players that he will be leaving the club this summer and it looks as though Leicester will be his next destination.

The Foxes have held talks with the Owls over a compensation package for the German, with it emerging that Rohl’s release clause has now lowered from £5m to £1m.

Finding a replacement for Danny Rohl will be near impossible

Ever since their head coach arrived at Hillsborough in October 2023, Sheffield Wednesday have seen a marked improvement on the pitch.

Their issues off the field have been a massive distraction, but Rohl inspired his team to a fantastic 12th place finish – ending the campaign just 10 points off the play-offs after coming so close to relegation the season before.

With the problems that Wednesday are having, enticing a quality replacement will be extremely tough, and there may not be much hope for success in S6 in 2025/26.

The Owls are under a second embargo, and relegation will be a real possibility next season as Rohl prepares to leave South Yorkshire.
