The EFL have released a damning statement regarding Sheffield Wednesday and owner Dejphon Chansiri as the Owls receive a three-window fee ban.
Sheffield Wednesday have been embroiled in financial turmoil so far this summer, after the club and owner Dejphon Chansiri were charged by the EFL.
Last week, some Owls staff had to take up emergency funding amid the ongoing financial issues at the club, and even further punishments could come for Sheffield Wednesday.
Takeover talks have persisted throughout the turmoil, with one intermediary last week revealing Chansiri’s £160m asking price for Sheffield Wednesday.
Now, the situation has taken another worrying turn for the Hillsborough faithful, after the EFL confirmed Sheffield Wednesday’s punishment.

EFL hit Sheffield Wednesday with three-window transfer fee restriction
Despite finishing in mid-table security in the Championship last season, the post-campaign summer at Sheffield Wednesday has been anything but stable.
Amid the financial chaos at the club, former owner Milan Mandaric has planned crunch talks with Chansiri, in a plea to stop the Thai businessman from ‘destroying the club’ that he sold to him in 2015 for £37.5m.
Now, things have taken another turn for the worse at Hillsborough, as the EFL have condemned Sheffield Wednesday to a “three-window fee restriction”, which comes regarding the 30-day rule which has been breached by Chansiri as a result of the unpaid wages.
The EFL statement explained: “The EFL can confirm that Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is now subject to a three-window fee restriction after exceeding 30 days of late payments between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025.
“In accordance with EFL Regulations, the restriction will cover the entirety of this summer’s window and two full windows thereafter (Winter 2026 and Summer 2026).
“The Club has notified the EFL of its intention to appeal this decision and this will be heard in due course.
Separately, on 3 June 2025, the EFL issued charges against the Club and owner Mr. Dejphon Chansiri in respect of non-payment of Player wages in March 2025 and May 2025.
“This matter is being considered by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, and because of the ongoing proceedings, the League is unable to comment further at this time.”
The latest revelation by the EFL regarding the Owls will have drastic consequences for the summer transfer window, the upcoming season, and the club’s future as a whole.

What does EFL punishment mean for Sheffield Wednesday?
As a result of the latest developments at Hillsborough, regarding the EFL’s statement, this means that Sheffield Wednesday cannot spend any transfer or loan fees for the duration dictated by the EFL.
Therefore, the Owls are forbidden to spend any money on permanent transfers or loan signings with fees involved, from the current window until January 2027.
Additionally, it is likely that the fee restriction will remain in place regardless of the ownership developments at the club.
With the Owls unable to shell out fees for signings this summer, it will force the club’s recruitment team to dip into the free agent market, in which there are some quality players who are Championship free agents this summer.
However, with the ongoing financial turmoil at Sheffield Wednesday and with head coach Danny Rohl going to extreme lengths to seal his exit, it remains to be seen whether any available free agents will be willing to make the move to Hillsborough this summer.
