Sheffield Wednesday takeover intermediary reveals Dejphon Chansiri’s ‘astronomical’ Owls asking price

Times are turbulent at Hillsborough as Sheffield Wednesday have been placed under an embargo by the EFL.

The Owls concluded the 2024/25 Championship campaign in a comfortable mid-table position of 12th. However, matters off the pitch are far more unstable for the second tier giants.

Sheffield Wednesday have been placed under an embargo by the EFL after Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay club staff and players in May.

As a result, some club staff had to take up emergency funding amid the ongoing financial issues at the club, and even more punishments could come for Sheffield Wednesday.

With growing concern over the future of Sheffield Wednesday, information has been reported regarding the apparent eye-watering asking price set by owner Chansiri for the Owls.

Dejphon Chansiri’s Sheffield Wednesday valuation amid takeover rumours

Frustration for the Owls faithful grows as the EFL can’t expel Chansiri under the Owners’ and Directors’ test, as there must be a legal reason to disqualify the Thai businessman.

With the situation unresolved, an inside scoop from a highly respected Sheffield local news outlet has come to light, which lifts the lid on the current takeover attempts at the Owls amid the Chansiri fiasco.

Information regarding a takeover is credited to The Star, who have revealed through an “intermediary who has spent the last weeks attempting to stimulate a takeover”, the Sheffield Wednesday asking price set by Chansiri.

The Star’s report states that takeover discussions with Chansiri have not managed to nail down a specific asking price, but the Owls chairman has claimed to have “rejected big-money bids previously, including one as high as £160 million.”

Additionally, the report states that Chansiri claims he has received several offers of over £100 million previously for the Owls.

The intermediary further explained to The Star: “The powers that be simply aren’t willing to play ball at a realistic valuation.

“The representation from the club, have got a figure in their head of double and beyond that realistic number. At this moment in time, their valuation is an unrealistic and astronomical figure.”

Chansiri’s turbulent time in the Owls boardroom is mirrored by the managerial merry-go-round seen at Hillsborough in the time since his acquisition.

Danny Rohl is currently the Owls’ head coach. However, Rohl is going to extreme lengths to seal his exit by telling native German outlet Bild that he wants to leave “as soon as possible.”

Rohl succeeded Xisco Munoz in October 2023, and kept Sheffield Wednesday safe from relegation to League One in his first season, before solidifying the Owls as a mid-table second tier side in 24/25.

In January 2015, a consortium led by Chansiri acquired a 100 percent stake of Sheffield Wednesday from Milan Mandaric, for a deal worth £37.5 million.

Since Chansiri took over, the Owls have had eight different head coaches at the Hillsborough helm, in as many years.

Stuart Gray was the Owls boss when Chansiri took over, but his departure would come just months after the Thai businessman bought Sheffield Wednesday.

If Rohl gets his wish, a new name will succeed him on the list this summer, but whether Chansiri remains as Sheffield Wednesday’s owner remains to be seen.
