Few players are more important to Frank Lampard at Coventry City than Haji Wright, but the star striker has some problems to deal with this summer.
With 12 league goals last season, Wright was the main attacking threat as Frank Lampard steered Coventry to a top six finish and the play-offs against the odds.
That journey ended in disappointment for the Sky Blues, with a last-gasp defeat to eventual winners Sunderland in the semi-finals.
Wright has since been on international duty with the USA, but his preparations for the 2025/26 Championship campaign have been dealt a major blow.

Haji Wright injury details revealed
Despite making a strong start to the Gold Cup with USA by scoring a goal in the opening game against Trinidad and Tobago, Wright has now had to withdraw from the tournament with an injury.
Discussing the Achilles injury with ESPN, USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino said: “Always sad to see a player leave, because the group was very good, and he’s a very good guy, and adds very good quality to the group, [a] different option.
“He’s a player that can play in different positions in the attack. Yes, sad situation, sad for him, sad for the team, but I think we need to prioritize his process to recovery.”
After further assessment of the injury, Pochettino later added: “He already arrived with some problems in his Achilles, and then we cannot fix the problem; he increased [his] pain. That is why that is the decision that we take.”
It’s interesting that Pochettino suggested the injury has been with Wright for a while, as this could imply the forward was carrying the issue during the Championship play-offs. Indeed, that could be a big explanation as to why Coventry lacked a cutting edge in attack over the two legs against Sunderland.

Haji Wright’s future may be impacted by this injury
Coventry fans are worried about losing Wright this summer, with a number of clubs tracking the 27-year-old. Recently-relegated Leicester and Ipswich are thought to be keen on Wright, among others.
If Wright were dreaming of a move, this Achilles injury may well put that idea to bed for this summer. However, in a bittersweet twist, it may be the ideal deterrent for Coventry in their hopes of keeping the striker.

Obviously, there is the risk that Wright may not recover effectively from the injury, though, which would be a real blow for Coventry next season.
Lampard and his Sky Blues will be hoping to go one better in 2025/26 and secure promotion, but it will not be an easy task with or without Wright. With big teams coming down, and ambitious rivals coming up from League One, this is sure to be one of the best and most competitive campaigns to date.
