Michael Carrick 90 minutes from letting Plymouth Argyle set an unwanted record vs Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough and Plymouth Argyle are both in desperate need of three points going into the weekend.

Plymouth Argyle are fighting to avoid Championship relegation, but despite some recent positive results, are still struggling.

Plymouth have to beat Middlesbrough, or at the very least draw, to stand any chance of staying up this season.

The Greens are bottom of the division with just four games to play, and their form across the campaign suggests they will only win one or two more matches.

As for Boro, it has, for the most part, been a season to forget for Michael Carrick and Co.

Middlesbrough fans have given up on promotion already, despite the fact that a top-six finish remains very possible.

The Teessiders could overtake Coventry City with a win on Friday, but conversely, a defeat would see an unwanted record set.

Middlesbrough in danger of handing record to Plymouth Argyle

Middlesbrough should be clear favourites for this game, given the major gap between the two teams in the table.

But Boro’s recent form suggests that a win is by no means guaranteed, and Plymouth have already proven this season they can cause Carrick’s side problems.

The pair last faced off on December 21st, 2024, with Emmanuel Latte Lath, Jonny Howson, and Hayden Hackney all getting on the scoresheet for the Reds in a 3-3 draw.

As well as failing to win on the road, Boro are starting to build an unwanted record against the Greens at the Riverside Stadium.

In fact, the North East outfit have lost their last two home meetings to Plymouth, and a third-straight defeat would see the away side having notched three consecutive victories against Middlebrough for the first time ever.

Middlesbrough record on Good Friday is a real concern

Not only are Boro failing to be consistent this season, but history suggests another loss on April 18 is likely.

Middlesbrough have played over 50 matches on Good Friday throughout their time as a club.

They are one of 51 teams to do so and, unfortunately, they have the lowest win percentage (21.6 percent) of every side to do so.

Middlesbrough have won 11, drawn 15, and lost a staggering 25 times. Plymouth, meanwhile, have three wins and three losses in their last six matches on Good Friday.
