Plymouth Argyle and Middlesbrough face off on Friday afternoon, with a lot at stake for both sides at opposite ends of the table.

After a 1-0 loss to Millwall last time out, Middlesbrough slipped down the Championship table and into eighth place.

However, thanks to Coventry City’s draw with Hull City on Monday, Boro are still only three points outside the top-six with a five-better goal difference than their play-off rivals.

At the other end of the table, meanwhile, Plymouth Argyle are once again fighting to avoid relegation from the Championship.

The Greens remain dead bottom of the division, but two wins and a draw from their last four have given them some hope of still staying up.

With this in mind, we have taken a look at what Plymouth will need to mount a survival push depending on their result against Middlesbrough.

Based on data available, we believe that 48 points is enough to avoid Championship relegation.

Going into the meeting with Boro, Plymouth are sat on 40 points, three adrift of 21st-place Derby County and five off Hull City.

23rd-place Luton Town are also on 40 points with a better goal difference, while Cardiff City are two points ahead at this stage.

In turn, with only four games of the season left to play, if Plymouth see off Michael Carrick’s side, they would need five points from their remaining three matches to reach 48 points.

That is certainly doable given Plymouth have picked up seven in their last four.

This is where things begin to get a lot harder for the Greens, who would only be on 41 points if they are held to a stalemate by the Teessiders.

It’d leave them needing seven points from three games, meaning going undefeated would have to happen.

Plymouth not losing three in a row is again possible but just based on their season as a whole, seems very unlikely.

Finally, should Middlesbrough end up coming out on top against Plymouth, they can basically kiss their chances of avoiding relegation goodbye.

They would need eight points from three games to reach 48, which would obviously require them to win three matches on the spin.

Plymouth have not done that on a single occasion across 2024/25, and haven’t even managed to win two in a row once.
