EFL Analysis have gained an insight into Middlesbrough’s long-term plans for loanees Mark Travers and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Boro have had a largely disappointing 2025 so far, with inconsistent form likely to see them miss out on the top-six.

Middlesbrough fans have given up on promotion, even after Coventry City’s recent draw with Hull City left them just three points outside the play-offs with a better goal difference.

But while it’s been another season of disappointment for the North East outfit, there have been a couple of bright sparks here and there.

Middlesbrough’s January transfer business has been criticised, but the capture of Mark Travers on loan from Bournemouth has proven to be an excellent addition.

Middlesbrough want to sign Mark Travers permanently

Seny Dieng was struggling for form prior to his injury, and with Sol Brynn also picking up an issue, Travers arrived at exactly the right time.

The goalkeeper has impressed between the sticks and we now have an insight into what Middlesbrough plan to do with the loanee come the end of 2024/25.

Speaking to EFL Analysis, transfer expert Graeme Bailey told us: “Boro are considering making Travers’ move permanent, they will have talks.

“He has done very well, but with Sol Brynn coming back, it remains to be seen if it is warranted.”

Middlesbrough stance on Kelechi Iheanacho transfer

During the same window, Boro secured Kelechi Iheanacho on loan from Spanish side Sevilla for the remainder of the season.

Iheanacho earned praise from Middlesbrough fans after his display against Blackburn Rovers earlier this month.

But the former Leicester City man has still largely disappointed and as things stand, a permanent move won’t be happening.

Bailey added: “Iheanacho – not much to say, it is highly unlikely he will join Boro on a permanent deal – thus far that move has not happened.

“It is perhaps more interesting to Boro fans to see what happens with Josh Coburn – who is looking very good at Millwall. I, like many Boro fans, would love to see him given a real chance to prove himself.”
