Michael Carrick had some interesting comments after Middlesbrough beat Plymouth Argyle on Friday.

Boro have taken an important step in their quest to secure a play-off place come May.

Coventry City beat West Brom in their Good Friday Championship meeting, seeing the Sky Blues remain above Middlesbrough for another few days.

However, Middlesbrough have climbed up to seventh and still remain just three points adrift of Frank Lampard’s side with a better goal difference.

Michael Carrick thinks Middlesbrough deserved to beat Plymouth

However, it’s fair to say that the majority of the North East outfit’s fanbase weren’t overly happy with how their team played.

Plymouth are bottom of the Championship, and Middlesbrough fans think their side played badly against the Greens.

While most on Teesside believed they were lucky to come away with the win despite playing badly, Michael Carrick had a different verdict post-match.

He suggested, as per BBC Sport, that Middlesbrough ‘deserved it’.

Carrick said: “The games are going to flip at times and the picture is going to change quite quickly, but I thought we deserved it.

“We kept going – it’s not easy when you have to break teams down all the time. I thought we created enough to score but it’s worth the wait. The late ones are the best.

“Great composure from Tommy to take that penalty at the end under the circumstances and it’s a big result for us.

“When you get to the end and there’s a lot at stake, there are going to be moments and it’s whether we can seize them really. Today was for Tommy really.”

Middlesbrough’s promotion chances revealed after Plymouth

Whether Middlesbrough actually played well or not does not really matter.

Three points were secured, and there is now a massive game against Sheffield Wednesday coming up on Monday.

After the action on April 18, meanwhile, Boro’s promotion chances have been assessed by Opta’s supercomputer.

They obviously have zero chance of going up automatically, but have been given a 24.32 percent chance of winning promotion via the play-offs.

For context, Coventry have a 79.28 chance of ending 2024/25 in the top six and then going up.
