Things are going from bad to worse for Middlesbrough, and their fans are all out of patience when it comes to one player who’s failed miserably at the Riverside.
Supporters were never particularly enthused about the appointment of Rob Edwards this summer, and with little progress made in the transfer market, Middlesbrough are tipped for a tough season in 2025/26.
A win over Swansea on the opening day of the season offered a brief glimmer of hope for Boro, but the Teessiders came crashing down to Earth this week with a 4-0 humbling at home to League One side Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup.
It’s hard to know who or what is to blame for Boro, but the supporters have decided they’ve seen enough of one player in particular.

Middlesbrough fans have had enough of Morgan Whittaker
In the 4-0 drubbing, fans watched big-money signing Morgan Whittaker once again fail to register a goal for the club. Since joining in January, the attacker has still not hit the back of the net for his new club.
Taking to Twitter/X to react to the game, supporters banded together to critique Whittaker, with suggestions that one of Middlesbrough’s record signings has been a complete failure.
One fan wrote: “A serious conversation needs to be had about Morgan Whittaker, 18 games 0 goals.”
Another added: “It has to be said we are superb at turning former goal scorers into absolute duffers.”
Elsewhere, one fan made the big claim that Morgan Whittaker is, “one of our worst signings in recent history, but that’s not saying much.”
Others said, “0 goals, 0 effort, 0 intensity,” and “He’s horrific and cost an absolute fortune for a Championship club.
“He is woeful to say the price we paid for him,” another added, with many piling on to the idea that Boro well and truly overpaid for the player when he arrived from Plymouth Argyle.
As for who to blame, one supporter pointed the finger at Sporting Director Kieran Scott, writing, “He is garbage it’s quite simple, another in a long line of appalling signings made by the incompetent Scott.”

Middlesbrough hit a new low, Rob Edwards has serious work to do before deadline day
Obviously, we have to take into account how seriously Championship clubs take the Carabao Cup. Some clubs, like Boro for example, may be more concerned with league duties.
But, to crash out so drastically against lower league opposition is not the kind of performance to instil any confidence among the fanbase when it comes to their new manager.
While we wouldn’t go as far as to suggest Boro will go down, in our Championship preview for 2025/26 we definitely shared some concerns over the Riverside outfit’s ability to compete this year.
Unless Edwards gets a new left wing-back who can make his 3-5-2 system work, and a new striker signing in soon, it could be a long, old season for Boro.
