Middlesbrough are still searching for their next manager, and EFL Analysis can exclusively shed some light on where things stand with regards to Rob Edwards’ push for the job.
After a disappointing tenth-place finish in 2024/25 and a lengthy review of things at the Riverside, the decision was made to part ways with Michael Carrick after more than three years at the club.
Middlesbrough have since been linked with Rob Edwards, Danny Rohl, Steve Cooper, and Marti Cifuentes among others.
Fans have made their feelings clear on Edwards, but what really matters at the end of the day is how Steve Gibson and his fellow Middlesbrough chiefs feel about the former Luton Town man.

Rob Edwards remains favourite for Middlesbrough job
EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal, via information from our Chief Football Correspondent Graeme Bailey, that Gibson has held a further meeting with Edwards over the weekend.
Edwards was previously interviewed by Boro bosses earlier this month, and we can confirm that he remains the favourite for the job at this stage.
However, he is not the only candidate in the running. For one, we know that Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl remains in contention.
It is unclear when a final decision will be made on the matter, but we do expect some significant movement within the next week.

Rob Edwards’ managerial stats compared to Danny Rohl
During his time with Luton, Edwards obviously, very famously, took the Hatters to the Premier League against all the odds. He almost kept them there, too, with Luton earning plaudits for their spirited displays in the top flight.
In 103 matches with Luton, Edwards won 33, drew 23, and lost 47; not bad considering 38 of them were in the Premier League. That’s just over a 32% win rate there.
Elsewhere, Edwards spent time with Telford, Forest Green, and Watford. Across those three roles, he generated a win ratio of 42.45% from 106 matches.
Of course, Rohl only has full management experience at Sheffield Wednesday, but he has previously worked at Southampton, Bayern Munich, and with the German national team.
| Stats | Rob Edwards | Danny Rohl |
| Games | 209 | 89 |
| Wins | 78 | 34 |
| Draws | 48 | 19 |
| Losses | 83 | 36 |
| Win % | 37.3% | 38.2% |
With the Owls, Rohl has overseen 89 games, winning 34, drawing 19, and losing 36. That gives him a 38.2% win ratio during his time in S6.
The only problem with Rohl, really, is that it could cost £5m to release him from Sheffield Wednesday.
