Winners and losers from a Rav van den Berg transfer away from Middlesbrough include Kieran Scott

Middlesbrough could part ways with defender Rav van den Berg this summer amid interest from around Europe.

After failing to win promotion once more in 2024/25, several players could depart Middlesbrough this summer.

Rav van den Berg commented on transfer interest recently, confirming one club are ‘very serious’ about a potential move.

EFL Analysis also revealed earlier in the week that Van den Berg has interest from the Premier League and Bundesliga.

The Middlesbrough defender is competing at the U21 European Championships currently, and a good tournament for the Netherlands could bump his price tag up.

Now, we have taken a look at the biggest winners and losers should the Dutchman wave goodbye to the Riverside Stadium this summer.

Winners from Rav van den Berg leaving Middlesbrough

Rav van den Berg

The most obvious winner from the player leaving is Van den Berg himself.

With top-flight teams around Europe looking at him, he will be able to progress his career away from the North East.

As well as Van den Berg, Hayden Hackney and Finn Azaz could leave Middlesbrough, depleting Boro’s squad even more, despite it already needing plenty of work.

Yes, more players will be signed, but it’s going to be another rebuilding year for the Teessiders with promotion seemingly unlikely already. Meanwhile, Rav could secure himself a transfer to a higher-level side.

Kieran Scott

While selling players is not what fans really want to see their club doing all the time, a big profit on Van den Berg would be another feather in the cap of Kieran Scott.

Middlesbrough offered Scott a new contract this year, and it’s easy to see why, given the recent success of the recruitment department.

Not every signing is going to be a hit, but Boro have already sold Emmanuel Latte Lath for a huge profit this year and could potentially do the same with Van den Berg and maybe even Azaz.

George McCormick and Harley Hunt

Aside from the Dutchman, Boro don’t really have any young centre-backs competing in the first team right now.

But if Rav is sold, it could open the door for rising stars George McCormick and Harley Hunt to earn more minutes.

17-year-old Hunt was signed from Swindon Town last summer and made his debut in the Carabao Cup against Stoke City.

McCormick is an academy product and made three senior appearances last term, including his Championship debut against West Brom.

Losers from Rav van den Berg leaving Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough fans

Some Middlesbrough fans have hit out at Van den Berg after his aforementioned comments.

But while his 2024/25 was hampered by injury, losing him this summer will still hurt the team.

Boro haven’t been in the top flight since 2017, and selling a top prospect is unlikely to help that.

New Middlesbrough manager

Right now, Middlesbrough are still searching for a Michael Carrick replacement.

But whoever does take the role is going to have a much weaker centre-back department if Van den Berg goes.

Darragh Lenihan has had injury problems for well over a year now, Matt Clarke left for Derby County in January, and George Edmundson hasn’t really impressed since his move was made permanent over the winter.
