While plenty of Championship clubs have parted ways with their managers already, Middlesbrough are taking their time to mull over Michael Carrick’s future.
Despite looking like genuine play-off contenders for much of the season, Middlesbrough’s form dipped at just the wrong time and they ended up in 10th place in the Championship table.

It’s no secret that inconsistency cost Middlesbrough dearly, and it could yet lead to Michael Carrick paying the ultimate price this summer with intense speculation over his future.
Whether that happens or not may well come down to the situation regarding another key man at Boro, with Kieran Scott’s future also in the air.

Middlesbrough want Kieran Scott to stay
The Middlesbrough sporting director has earned praise at times for his work in steering the Teessiders’ transfer strategy, and Scott was even suggested as a candidate for Crystal Palace in the wake of Dougie Freedman’s exit earlier this year.
Meanwhile, some have suggested Scott failed to provide Carrick with what he needed in January, leading to the dismal end-of-season finish.
Regardless, according to Alan Nixon on Patreon, it is Scott who could be set to prolong his stay at the Riverside this summer, with talk of a new contract in the works for the 41-year-old.
It is thought chairman Steve Gibson is keen for Scott to stick around and will look to extend his current deal after a performance review this summer.
As a result, it is suggested Carrick’s position could come under threat, with Rob Edwards and Alex Neil both mooted as possible replacements due to their own ties with Scott.

What do we know about Michael Carrick’s future?
The main thing we know right now is that Michael Carrick’s tenure is being assessed and reviewed by the Middlesbrough hierarchy.
Some have suggested Carrick should be given another chance, but the Boro fans seem to be leaning more towards getting rid and starting afresh this summer.
Carrick himself insists he is just carrying on with his work, but there is every chance we see a new Middlesbrough manager installed before the 2025/26 campaign begins.
