Aaron Ramsey is set to sign up for his next role in the upcoming days amid links to the Cardiff City vacancy.

Cardiff City suffered relegation in the 2024/25 Championship season, condemning their fate in League One for the upcoming campaign.

Despite relieving Omar Riza of his managerial duties and rolling the dice to hand the reins to Aaron Ramsey, the Bluebirds were unable to maintain a relegation fight after results elsewhere settled the score on the penultimate day of the campaign.

Building ahead of a League One season, where there will be plenty of pressure on Cardiff to bounce back, they will be hoping to secure a new manager in the coming days.

Several names have been linked with the Welsh side, notably Ramsey, who was tipped to continue his tenure at Cardiff in League One, but his most recent decision shows that he has opted for a widely different route.

Cardiff City’s hunt for a new manager looks set to continue as Aaron Ramsey is set to move to Mexican side Pumas, where he will continue his playing career, per Fabrizio Romano on X.

Both Ramsey and former Oxford United boss Des Buckingham were the frontrunners for the Cardiff job, which means that the ex-U’s boss will likely take on the role.

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones was also linked with the vacancy at Cardiff City, but his interests lay with his current side, who he notched a return to the Championship with and was therefore awarded a new contract.

Another name previously linked to Cardiff this summer has been Michael Beale, but that ship seems to have sailed.

Aaron Ramsey’s priorities would have made it difficult for Cardiff to strike a deal

It is clear now that, ahead of Ramsey’s next move, it would have been a difficult task for Cardiff to strike a deal with the Welshman due to his apparent desire to continue his playing career.

As Cardiff move on to different options, it could be argued that going for a different option would potentially suit the club’s project.

The priority next season must be getting out of League One and to maximise their chances, there needs to be plenty of consideration into getting an experienced manager in the dugout.

Whilst Ramsey has the potential, after his playing career, to stabilise a decent managerial career, it could benefit Cardiff that they won’t be taking a risk in giving the midfielder that opportunity to showcase that.

Looking at alternative options, Buckingham fits the description of someone who could give Cardiff the best chance at returning to the Championship at the first time of asking.
