It’s been a successful transfer window for Norwich City so far, but the Canaries have just suffered their first blow of the summer with the departure of Borja Sainz.

Liam Manning has been blessed with the backing of the Norwich City board since taking over this summer.

The new Norwich manager has already brought in the likes of Harry Darling and Jakov Medic to bolster the Canaries’ defence, while Mathias Kvistgaarden is an exciting attacking signing.

But, after weeks of speculation, it has now been confirmed that Norwich will have to head into the 2025/26 campaign without Borja Sainz.

Norwich City fans react to Borja Sainz transfer

It emerged last week that Sainz was due to join Porto, and we even discussed the fact his £14.2m move was a good bit of business for Norwich, all things considered.

Now that the move has been confirmed, it seems the Norwich fanbase agree with that sentiment. Taking to Twitter/X, most of the supporters are pleased with the deal Ben Knapper and co. have managed to secure.

One supporter wrote, “Brilliant bit of business for the club. Got him for free and sold him for a fortune,” while another added, “Good move for all parties. Porto have got a proper talent on their hands and we make £14m pure profit on a player we signed for free two summers ago.”

Meanwhile, other fans were simply not too fazed by losing Sainz, despite his return of 19 goals last season.

One said, “Great player who produced some magic for us and great to watch on his day but not nearly consistent enough to get us where we want to be.”

Another sees the money gained in this situation as being crucial to keeping Josh Sargent, who is valued at £18m.

“Should be absolutely gutted but truth of the matter is, I’m not! Please use all of that money to keep Josh [Sargent] and let’s have a massive go at it this season,” they wrote.

Borja Sainz’s success at Norwich City was brief but brilliant

Borja Sainz scored 16 goals in the first 20 games of the 2024/25 campaign, including two hat-tricks. That’s truly phenomenal, and he would have stormed to the Championship Golden Boot if he had kept that up.

However, after being banned for five games for spitting at then-Sunderland player Chris Mepham, Sainz’s form took a drastic downturn.

The Spaniard scored just three goals in 17 games since the turn of the year, with his teammate Josh Sargent well and truly taking over as the main man at Carrow Road.

It’s not surprising then, that Norwich fans are somewhat ambivalent towards Sainz’s exit. Indeed, if his sale does mean they can keep Sargent, you’d have to make the Canaries firm favourites for promotion this season.
