One Birmingham City revelation explains losing run, Chris Davies must solve it against Swansea City

Birmingham City have lost three games in a row and one key statistic explains Chris Davies’ side’s issue.

The Blues aren’t used to such a streak, given they haven’t suffered that many consecutive defeats since March 2024. They only lost three league games last term in League One.

After opening their second tier return with a draw against Ipswich Town and then beating Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers and Oxford United, Birmingham fell to a 1-0 defeat to Port Vale in the Carabao Cup second round, lost 2-0 at Leicester City and on Saturday, suffered a 1-0 loss at Stoke City.

The Blues have failed to score in their last three outings, and they actually sit bottom of the Championship in a key attacking statistic.

Birmingham City bottom of the Championship for shots on target per match

Birmingham City have managed the least amount of shots on target per match in the second tier.

Sheffield United, who just sacked Ruben Selles and re-hired Chris Wilder, are bottom of the league with no points and only one goal scored, but have had more shots on target per match than Blues.

Derby County sit just below them in second from bottom.

Given Birmingham’s impressive attacking options including summer signings Kyogo Furuhashi, Demarai Gray and Sunderland loanee Patrick Roberts, fans will have been hoping Davies’ side would have created much more during their opening five league fixtures.

What’s going wrong with Birmingham City’s attacking ability?

Birmingham conceded in the opening half an hour of their trip to Stoke, and Davies labelled his side’s start to the clash as ‘soft’.

“You expect it to be a tough start here and it was – and we weren’t good enough in that first 20-30 minutes,” he said. “It cost us the game because very rarely have I seen us as passive and soft as that in the opening periods of a game, especially away from home.”

Despite trying to get back into the game, Blues did little with the possession they did have. Davies is yet to figure out his best front line, with Marvin Ducksch yet to get a run in the side and all forwards learning each other’s game still. Fans have also been wondering whether playing a no.10 would benefit them, with Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Tommy Doyle able to play in this position.

They will need to start on the front foot against Swansea City at St Andrew’s this weekend.
