Sheffield United are parting ways with long-time manager Chris Wilder and one potential candidate has been ruled out.

It emerged last week that Sheffield United and Chris Wilder were set for talks.

They came on the back of what proved to be a disappointing 2024/25 campaign that saw the Blades miss out on automatic promotion and lose the Championship play-off final to Sunderland.

Sheffield United’s owners were questioned after news emerged of a potential Wilder exit last week.

However, the Yorkshire outfit are now moving ahead with plans to sack their long-time boss, and an insight into who won’t be their new manager has been provided.

Sheffield United prepare to sack Chris Wilder with manager ruled out

It emerged via Sky Sports News on June 17 that Sheffield United are set to sack Wilder in the coming days.

EFL Analysis can confirm via our transfer correspondent, Graeme Bailey, that the manager has indeed been let go.

We also understand that former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil held talks and was confident, but Blades’ owners want someone more tied in with the analytical approach, and they are assessing their options.

The report from Sky, meanwhile, says that O’Neil is not expected to take up the role.

Sheffield United fans unimpressed with Chris Wilder replacements

As well as O’Neil, it emerged last week that Ruben Selles was a candidate to replace Wilder.

However, Sheff Utd fans were not impressed with links to Selles or O’Neil, with many suggesting it would be better to keep Wilder.

That is no longer an option, and the Blades are going to have to get to work on landing a new manager ahead of 2025/26.

Selles saved Hull City from relegation this past season but has since been sacked by the Tigers.
