Paul Merson has just urged four-time Premier League winner to sign for Leeds United, it’s baffling

Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League was confirmed on Monday, and the Whites are already being linked with moves for some sensational deals.

Although the Championship title is still up for grabs, Leeds fans are more excited about their next campaign in the top flight, even if the challenge is daunting.

Roy Keane is worried about the promoted sides, urging them to tighten up at the back, as the gap between the Championship and Premier League continues to increase.

If Daniel Farke isn’t sacked by Leeds, as speculation continues to mount over his future, significant investment in his squad will be needed to stand any chance of surviving.

The 49ers will arm the German with a war chest of funds to spend in the transfer window, and one pundit has urged the Whites to sign a four-time Premier League winner.

Paul Merson has urged Raheem Sterling to sign for Leeds United

Leeds want to sign Manor Solomon permanently this summer and are willing to pay £10 million to secure his services.

The West Yorkshire outfit have also been linked with Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to replace Illan Meslier who is likely to leave Elland Road.

Those are two realistic additions Farke could make to his squad, but former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has shockingly urged Raheem Sterling to sign for Leeds in the transfer window.

Sterling, who is currently on loan at the Gunners from Chelsea, has witnessed his career crumble dramatically since leaving Manchester City in 2022, only starting six times in the Premier League in 2024/25.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the Englishman, Merson feels a move to Elland Road would be an ideal destination as he would be granted first-team football and has the experience to help a younger side.

“If I was Leeds United, I would be looking at Raheem,” he said. “They’re experienced, they’re a young team Leeds, they like to play attacking football. He’s very good in the dressing room, good team player, he’s got all the experience in the world. He’s won Premier League’s, for me, that wouldn’t be a bad move for Leeds and for Raheem Sterling.”

A deal for Sterling wouldn’t be possible

Leeds will want to spend their riches wisely this summer and that means avoiding deals for players such as Sterling.

Although he’s undoubtedly a quality talent with an incredible goal and assist record across his career, the winger earns a whopping £110k-per-week, according to Capology, and that is far more than their current highest earners.

Leeds United highest earners per week
Patrick Bamford – £70,000
Junior Firpo – £60,000
Daniel James – £50,000
Pascal Strujik – £50,000
Manor Solomon £45,000

Including a huge transfer fee required, even despite his poor form this term, Leeds would have to break the bank to sign Sterling.

That isn’t a financially feasible move, and the player is perhaps unlikely to be attracted to a newly promoted side, making this an impossible deal to complete.
