We may be a few weeks away from the end of the season, but Peterborough United and Birmingham City will be battling to lift some silverware this weekend in the EFL Trophy final on Sunday.
There are just a handful of games left in League One now, and Birmingham City are all-but confirmed to be the latest champions of the third tier.
Peterborough, meanwhile, are pretty much stranded in midtable. The Posh are unlikely to break into the top half of the table, and have no reason to look over their shoulders at the relegation dogfight.
But, while Birmingham are chasing records in the league, Peterborough have a chance to make some history of their own if they can beat the Blues and lift the Vertu Trophy this weekend.

Peterborough United could be the first team ever to retain EFL Trophy
Peterborough go into this Wembley showcase very much the underdogs, looking to take down the financial behemoths that are Tom Brady’s Birmingham.
The Blues have been relentless this season, and Chris Davies’ men are running away with the league, but if Peterborough can triumph on Sunday, they will be the first team ever to lift the Football League Trophy two seasons in a row.
Incredibly, no team has ever managed to retain the EFL Trophy since its inception in the 1981/82 campaign.
But, Peterborough won the competition last year, beating Wycombe Wanderers in an absolutely thrilling final.
Harrison Burrows, now one of the best players in the Championship for Sheffield United, opened the scoring late on in the 85th minute, but Wycombe levelled the score four minutes later and we seemed destined for extra-time and penalties.
That is until Burrows added his second of the game in the 91st minute to win the tie and deliver the trophy for Peterborough.
| Season | Winner |
| 2013/14 | Peterborough United |
| 2014/15 | Bristol City |
| 2015/16 | Barnsley |
| 2016/17 | Coventry City |
| 2017/18 | Lincoln City |
| 2018/19 | Portsmouth |
| 2019/20 | Salford City |
| 2020/21 | Sunderland |
| 2021/22 | Rotherham United |
| 2022/23 | Bolton Wanderers |
| 2023/24 | Peterborough United |
Interestingly, that was Peterborough’s second time lifting the EFL Trophy, having previously triumphed in the 2013/14 season. If they can win again this weekend, they will also match Bristol City’s record as the most successful club in the competition’s history.

Peterborough United have already spoiled one Hollywood story this season
Not only would Peterborough United be making history by winning the EFL Trophy again this weekend, they would also be preventing an absolute juggernaut in achieving success by stopping Birmingham City.
The Blues would obviously love to do the league and cup double, and they’re odds-on favourites to do so. But, Ferguson will relish the opportunity to upset those predictions.
The Posh have form for this, too, having eliminated another Hollywood darling, Wrexham, in the semi-final back at the end of February.
All signs pointed to an obvious clash of the superstar owners for the final, with Brady’s Birmingham already securing their place in the final, and Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ Red Dragons leading 2-0 after 38 minutes at the Racecourse Ground.
However, Posh fought back, with a goal in the 72nd minute giving them hope, and a 91st minute equaliser from Bradley Ihionvien sending the tie to penalties. There, Ferguson’s side came through 4-2 winners, and Phil Parkinson’s Wembley dream was over.
Now, Peterborough to cause another upset on the biggest stage.
