Sheffield United are fighting for promotion right now, but the future of Rhian Brewster in particular is very much up for debate with the striker’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season.
The Blades have enjoyed a very successful campaign so far and, in spite of a two-point deduction at the start of the season, are sitting in second place right now with six games to go.
Chris Wilder’s men are currently one point behind the new league leaders Burnley, and one point ahead of Leeds United, who are crumbling week by week.
United have an abundance of talent across their squad, but Brewster has established himself as a fan favourite of late.
Brewster has registered more appearances this season than he has in years, and he also scored the matchwinner in the Steel City derby, but his future at Bramall Lane is still up in the air.

Rhian Brewster feels better than ever, and he wants a new contract
Speaking on the Sky Sports Essential EFL podcast, Brewster was asked how he is feeling as a player now, after seemingly putting injury issues behind him this year.
He said: “The past few seasons with injuries I haven’t been able to get games under my belt and gain confidence, but this year I have. That’s down to the trust of the gaffer, giving me plenty of minutes – you want to play as much as you can.
“They managed me well at the beginning of the season, not just throwing me in, it’s been gradual… the more games I’m playing, it’s more trust in your body and knowing it can handle it all… and I’m getting more confident that I can score and contribute.”
Reflecting on those past injury problems and the impact the setbacks had, Brewster added: “It’s been annoying, from a physical point of view. Every time I show signs of getting back to my best, I get an injury.
“It’s all in the past now though, I can’t do anything about it, I can only look forward. We have to finish the season strong and get promoted.”

On the impact Wilder has had on his career, and in particular this little revival this season, Brewster added: “It’s a good relationship. He brought me in when I first signed and it didn’t go the way we wanted. But he’s back, and we’ve spoken about how to manage me and help me get back to the best I can be.
“Our connection is very good, he talks to me pretty much every day asking how I am… when you’re not playing you’re disappointed, but I can go and speak to him and ask him why and to be honest, I’ve now been involved in almost every game this season. He’s put his trust in me.”
Finally, Brewster was asked about that contract situation, and what his goals are for the near future. He said: “I want to be back in the Premier League. I’m concentrating on the rest of the season, but the club and I are in talks about a new contract. I love it here, I love the fans… My ultimate goal… is to play on the biggest stage, I want to show everyone what I can do.”

Chris Wilder desperately wants Rhian Brewster to succeed
It’s no surprise really that talks are underway to tie Brewster to a new deal. As a Chris Wilder signing, the United boss has a vested interest in ensuring the striker succeeds at the club.
Before the Steel City derby, we looked at Wilder’s comments on Brewster, in which he described the forward as a ‘popular’ figure at the club, and someone he and everyone at Bramall Lane are rooting for.
Brewster is one of the high profile Championship stars with a decision to make this summer, but it certainly sounds like he has already made his mind up.
Whether the Blades do commit to that new contract may well depend on whether they get promoted. But, with Tom Cannon failing to deliver so far, maybe Wilder will be happy to keep hold of a player like Brewster; someone he knows inside out, and who he can rely on to turn up when it matters.
