Ruben Selles admits he ‘cannot control’ one thing as Sheffield United future questions arise

It’s four defeats in four for Sheffield United in the Championship, and they head into the international break locked firmly in the relegation zone.

After defensive issues plagued the Blades in their opening three games, supporters were hoping that the £10m arrival of Japhet Tanganga would help shore them up at the back.

However, they were once again made to pay as they failed to deal with a fast break away from Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium, with Tommy Conway placing the ball past Michael Cooper in the away side’s goal.

Ruben Selles is already under plenty of pressure, and this will of course only increase that pressure and he has made a key admission after questions about his future at Sheffield United.

Ruben Selles opens up on where he stands at Sheffield United after Middlesbrough defeat

The Blades struggled to get a hold of the ball in midfield once again this weekend, and it allowed Middlesbrough to take advantage, with Sverre Nypan looking excellent in particular.

It did Selles no favours, and after the final whistle, he was questioned about his future at Sheffield United. He said (via: The Star): “Well, listen, I cannot control the situation. I will expect to go to my house tonight and then tomorrow go to work and then continue as normal. It’s not in my hands to make a decision.

“And until the very last moment, I will just do my best and try to do my things. When the situation is not in my control, I don’t think too much about what is going to happen in the future. Because realistically, I do as much as I can.

“I have been in worse situations and I end up just making the things happen and changing totally around the dynamics.

The Sheffield United boss continued: “So I don’t have a doubt about it. I’ve been in situations where I haven’t been paid on time, situations when they get points deduction, situations where we didn’t know if we would be able to train the next day at the training ground.

“And the reality is that we turned things around at the moment of connection. But you need to work hard to go to that moment and you need to go through a couple of critical moments on that journey. That’s what I learned. I understand and accept that this is football, but I also know that this team is going to do great things.”

Ruben Selles’ first four games at Hull City vs the Blades

Having left Reading for Hull City in December 2024, Selles is no stranger to the Championship and he has already proven that he can grind out results in this division.

The Tigers were struggling for form when the Spaniard arrived at the MKM Stadium, and he went on to win nine of his 27 games, drawing seven and losing 11. However, he also had a slow start, picking up just four points in his first four matches.

While it is obviously a much worse situation for Sheffield United, Selles will feel as though he can turn it around given time.

Yet, with supporters singing the name of Chris Wilder in the away end, surely the writing is on the wall for Selles at Bramall Lane.
