Ruben Selles outlines one thing Hull City ‘need to correct’ after draw vs Coventry City

Hull City moved one point closer to survival last night with a draw against Coventry City, but the Tigers still need to improve in one crucial area from here on out.

It was a game that had the potential to completely transform either the Championship play-off race or the relegation fight, but in the end, a 1-1 draw didn’t quite help either team as much as they’d hoped.

Coventry City took the lead early in the second half at the MKM Stadium on Monday night, with a scrappy goal just after the interval.

But, Hull City fought back and their resilience paid off, with Abu Kamara securing a point for the Tigers in the 82nd minute.

Frank Lampard believed Coventry deserved more from the game, but for Ruben Selles, it has to be viewed as a hard-earned point that takes Hull a step closer to staying up.

Hull City must stay focused, they’re too slow in the second half

Discussing the match (via Hull City’s socials), Selles praised his players for competing with a top team, but insisted the Tigers could and should have been better, and could even have taken control of the game at times.

He said: “I think we played against a really good opponent and it was a difficult game. I think we performed well. There were periods of the game when we controlled the ball and we had situations where we could go and score to make it 1-0.

“They also had situations. That goal at the beginning of the second half was just a setback for us because it was really too early again, and this is something we need to correct.

“But we showed what a good group of players we have. The squad that we have, the subs that made an impact, and we continue being competitive. So, we will take the point and move forward.”

He has a point, to be fair. Hull fans were fuming at Kasey Palmer’s miss, and it just underlines the fact that the club are where they are this season due to just being slightly too weak at the back, and simply not being clinical enough in attack.

Hull City must make the most of upcoming home games

We saw some bright sparks in Hull City’s side last night, and there’s enough there to suggest they can survive this season.

But, if they are to make it out of this Championship relegation battle alive, Hull will have to get some massive results in these next four games.

They’re three points clear of the bottom three as things stand, with a fairly superior goal difference. But, with games coming up against fellow relegation candidates, Derby County and Portsmouth, that position of strength could dissipate very quickly.

Hull will look at the home ties, against Preston and Derby, as must-wins. With the crowd (hopefully) behind the players there, Hull will need to grind out the necessary results, and if they do, they can go into a tricky final game away at Pompey knowing that they’re safe.
