Ryan Mason hopeful West Brom can keep hold of ‘outstanding’ talent after transfer interest

West Brom continued their perfect start to the season under new manager Ryan Mason with a 3-2 victory over Wrexham at the Racecourse.

Ryan Mason will have been pleased by his players’ performances overall, despite conceding two goals.

Isaac Price stole the headlines as he stood out with his two goals against Wrexham to help guide the Baggies to a victory over their Welsh opponents.

While West Brom fans were not pleased about the coverage of their side in the build-up to the game, they won’t care, as they got the three points.

It is early days, but there is a confidence building around the Hawthorns about a potential promotion this season, with Isaac Price buying into that exact ambition.

While Price impressed everyone, there was another player that stood out to Mason from the victory over the Red Dragons.

Mason is a fan of Mikey Johnston

Speaking after the match with ITV about their victory over Wrexham, Ryan Mason pointed to the performance of Mikey Johnston as being the difference maker.

Johnston came off the bench and provided an assist within seconds for Jed Wallace to make it 2-1 before setting up Isaac Price’s second goal of the game to make it 3-1 at the time.

Mason said: “Mikey has got so much ability; there was a situation with him. It is obviously well documented in pre-season that it sort of interrupted the first week or 10 days of his pre-season.

“So, he is probably a week or 10 days behind all the lads, but he’s had a real positive week. I thought Tuesday he was outstanding.

“Today he has come on and helped the team get over the line, which is all I can ask for.”

Mikey Johnston’s disrupted pre-season

Johnston had been involved in arguably one of the strangest transfer sagas of the summer, as he had been linked with a move to Flamengo.

This move never came to pass after a string of strange incidents, including Ireland legend Robbie Keane being asked by Brazilian TV about the quality of Johnston, and it seemed he would be heading to the South American nation.

While the exact reason for the move breaking down is unknown, there was a belief that it was fan pressure upon Flamengo that stopped the transfer.

Meanwhile, Johnston confirmed that he was happy to stay and work with West Brom and help their Championship season ahead.
