Sheffield United fan makes ‘shambolic’ Ruben Selles claim, he wants him sacked already

One Sheffield United supporter has issued a stunning demand for Ruben Selles to move on after just one game.

Sheffield United were defeated by Bristol City at home in their 2025/26 Championship opening fixture, with Ruben Selles’ side suffering a crushing 4-1 loss.

While the Blades looked dangerous on the front foot and managed to generate a large amount of chances against the Robins, Sheffield United looked incredibly leaky at the back.

The centre-back partnership of Tyler Bindon and Rhys Norrington-Davies was shaky from the first minute, and Selles’ side continuously looked fragile when Bristol City dispatched a counter-attack.

There was always set to be pressure on Selles following the surprise dismissal of fan favourite Chris Wilder, and one Sheffield United fan has already laid out their wishes for yet another change in direction from COH Sports.

Sheffield United supporter demands Ruben Selles’ sacking

One Blades fan has surprised many by asking for Ruben Selles to be sacked from Sheffield United, just one game into the Championship campaign.

It was a fairly gutless performance that was on show vs Sheffield United, and Phil, who called in to Football Heaven, has already seen enough of the former Hull City and Reading boss.

“Unfortunately, I can’t get the owners to resign because they’re the owners,” said the fan. “But I can ask for the manager to resign because that was completely shambolic.

“That was a complete shambles. We have seen, despite the results in pre-season, how wide open we are at the back.

“What I would say to the manager and the owners is ‘how have we arrived at game number one with a team that was announced today that was clearly not up to it.”

Last season under former boss Chris Wilder, Sheffield United conceded just 17 goals at Bramall Lane, which averaged out to 0.74 per game.

Astonishingly, the Blades hadn’t conceded four at home all season until Burnley’s 2-0 win on Boxing Day. Prior to that, Sheffield United conceded two on the opening home game against QPR before a run of nine games at Bramall Lane without conceding a goal.

Ruben Selles needs significant backing this summer

Whilst there was plenty to unravel following the tough defeat to Bristol City, now is not the time to immediately turn on Ruben Selles and hold him accountable.

Many supporters know that the defenders available to Selles are clearly not up to the standard needed for a club with ambitions of reaching the Premier League this season.

With the remaining time in the summer transfer window, there needs to be a major overhaul on the defensive options, particularly at centre-back.

Sheffield United owners, COH Sports, have to realise the clear insufficiency in their transfer dealings so far and bring in sufficient cover in the heart of defence.
