Sheffield United fanbase left divided over departure of Chris Wilder signing who left on a free

One player’s departure from Bramall Lane has left Sheffield United supporters debating whether it was a poor decision made by COH Sports.

Sheffield United have faced huge problems at this early stage of the 2025/26 Championship season, with Ruben Selles’ side sitting rock-bottom with no points in their opening four games.

The Blades have struggled in the post-Chris Wilder era after the treasured Sheffield United boss was let go in place of Selles, who had only recently been sacked from his role at Hull City.

Results have been sub-par, but it comes after wholesale changes at the club, with several departures affecting Selles’ squad.

While they were able to keep hold of Gus Hamer, Vini Souza’s absence has significantly affected Sheffield United. One other departed player has also sparked debate as fans decide whether it was the correct move to let him go or not.

Sheffield United fans left divided over Rhian Brewster departure

One of the glaring issues for Sheffield United so far this season has been their inability to find the back of the net.

In four games, Sheffield United are the lowest goal scorers in the Championship so far, finding the back of the net just once.

After the difficulties faced in the final third, Sheffield United supporters have reflected on Rhian Brewster’s free departure from Bramall Lane, who now finds himself at fellow Championship side Derby County.

When debating his departure, one Sheffield United fan said: “He is better than Cannon and Chong and other options like that.”

As one fan backed up that argument, saying ‘I fully agree’, one supporter then responded by saying: “He had five years and had three good months and is our record transfer fee. No chance he deserved a contract.”

Another fan said: “How much time should we give him? Can’t honestly remember a single game where I thought wow this is a £20 million player. Big disappointment.”

Rhian Brewster is already off the mark for Derby County

While Rhian Brewster’s tenure at Sheffield United was incredibly challenging, many could argue that he finally showed promise in his final season at the club, bagging four goals and notching three assists for Chris Wilder’s side, including one in the Steel City derby.

It seems that Brewster has built on that steady season, scoring last time out for new club Derby County in a 2-2 away draw at Ipswich Town.

Sheffield United have brought in Danny Ings to help solve the attacking crisis, but there is still doubt that maybe Brewster could have finally shone for the Blades under Ruben Selles and finally began to pay back the hefty fee they originally forked out for him.
